*We open our scene shortly after the previous. DT is topless in the gym, glistening with sweat. He is on the butterfly machine, but we see his sweat on the rowing machine and chest press. He finishes a set and leaps up. He walks over to the sit up machine and sets it to a reasonable weight and begins working a set there. What a jerk, not cleaning his mess … he seems distraught. From the back of the room we see a shape silhouette the window of the door. A beep is heard as a card key opens the gym door and in walks DT’s tag team partner, and co-tag team champion, Mistress Discipline. She pauses as she sees him, glistening with sweat … lets out a quick sigh and straightens her messy bun, and walks towards him.*
Mistress Discipline: This is not your usual behavior, Death Trap. Usually, you accept the barbs Chaos throws at us and move on. This was an almost innocent suggestion and you stormed off. Are you sure you are alright?
*DT finishes his reps and releases the handles of the sit up machine. He stands up and walks over to a bench and sits down, letting out a deep sigh. Mistress eyes up the soaking wet machine and puts her hand to her head in exasperation*
Death Trap: I’m sorry, it’s just this whole year plus … I know I can still perform at that high level. I’m not that far removed from being a world champion. An X*Crown champion! But this has been trying. To hear this idiot complain about a few losses, about being betrayed by a known betrayer, to basically be a pot calling the kettle black after what he has done to his allies … it got under my skin. I know I am at the tail end of my career, I don’t feel old or past my prime. Hell I had a ten year break. But lately, I question my ability to still produce. He has had so much more success than me and yet he whines. And here I am just plugging away, smile on my face. He just wriggles his way into your head, ya know?
*MD walks over to the bench opposite him and sits down near his gym bag.*
Mistress Discipline: His words are hollow. People like Donzig are impossible to please. Focus on what you can.
Death Trap: I know. I know. Donzig is the prototypical power player. Always having to be at the front of the line, always having to have his way. He thinks the world revolves around him. I don’t do this to impress colleagues like him. I do this for the fans. They drive me to keep going. But it’s hard not to feel a little down going into this match, knowing this man wants to end my career for completely impersonal reasons. Just because he wants to know he can. He’s evil.
Mistress Discipline: And this can be an advantage. He will be reckless and over confident. He will surely try to punish you instead of focusing on winning. And he will assuredly try to prove his superior skill by knowing what you will do before you do it. Now how could a smart, experienced XHF Legend possibly use that to his advantage?
*DT stops and ponders this for a minute.*
Death Trap: Well … he is a brawler, so he isn’t going to play to my strengths. He wants to be in close. Gritty. He wants to get in my personal space. Which for a submissionist is fine, it’s a matter of if I can tangle him up before he beats me down. He can’t possibly match my endurance though. It’s literally the thing I’m most known for. Taking more punishment than anyone and winning. But this can’t be a war of attrition.
Mistress Discipline: Do you recall how you won your first MCCW title?
Death Trap: I kicked the shit out of Eichi and dropped him on his head so he couldn’t stop me escaping a cage.
*She presents her arms out as if gifting him something, implying the solution has been found.*
Death Trap: Of course, if he wants to take the fight in close and grind me down, I have to hit him hard and fast. He forgets I am an accomplished martial artist. My knees and elbows and feet are just as lethal as my knowledge of the ring and submissions. Won’t be easy though. Donzig, for all his bravado, is actually a gifted fighter. But he is cocky and can’t stand being wrong. I don’t know if he’s going to adapt to this style. He expects me to try and wear him out and I kick his head clean off his shoulders. If I play my cards right, he’ll get flashbacks to Bloodied Fox and his strike oriented style. I bet I could piss him off enough to make a mistake. I mean it worked for Rat Bastard.
*Mistress winces*
Mistress Discipline: Let us not compare ourselves to the common vermin. It is unbecoming of a champion.
*She pats the title belt over her shoulder.*
Death Trap: He is also a two time X*Crown champion, you know.
Mistress Discipline: And he has not won anything of merit since returning to the network! You are a two time world champion, a global tag team champion, an End of Days winner, and an X*Crown champion HERE in the network. So stop doubting yourself and do what you do best.
*She reaches into his bag and pulls out a towel and wrings it in her hands as a graphic metaphor.*
Death Trap: Donzig is a miserable little pile of angst and anger. He needs to be put in his place. I need to step up and knock him down a peg. If he thinks losing to EVK is a travesty, then losing to me will be a full blown tragedy. But it will be fitting. Donzig spends all his time curating this image of the conqueror. Running to every fed that will book him, dominating a bunch of the local talent. But he has his limits. He may be a big player in Wrestle: UK, he may be the season 1 dominator of REIGN. But he is not the main attraction. He never will be. His attitude assures him of always playing second fiddle. If he reached the top after all, what would he complain about? His anger motivates him. Well, congratulations Donnie boy, you are exactly like the man you seem to idolize, Anthony Caffrey. Driven by spite and anger and spitting rage at anyone who blocks your path. You wouldn’t know what to do with success if you ever did crest that hill.
Mistress Discipline: It is a sad state of affairs to be sure. But remember, all you need to do is knock him off a platform into the pool below. You have the weight advantage, you have the height advantage. You have the experience. And most importantly, he will not expect you to try and end it quick with strikes.
Death Trap: Donzig tries to desecrate all I hold dear about this industry. He is right about one thing. If he knocks me down, I’ll just keep getting up. It’s what I do. Jason Justice took my MCCW title from me in minutes, so I came back and took it from him and made him tap out. We failed to win these titles in the Annihilator, so we came back and took them anyway. Donzig, I’ve made my career of beating back sycophants like you. I’ve made it my job to give these fans the show they deserve while humbling loud mouthed leaders of subservient grunts like you. Ask Mongo what it takes to stop me from taking apart your little cabal. Put simply, better men than you have tried to take me down. Hell, YOU already gave it your best shot, from behind, with a gang, like the coward you are. You’ve built yourself up to be this all-encompassing conqueror. But my doubts are behind me, my will has been steeled. And it’s time to clean up the filth.
*Mistress tosses the towel from his bag at him, which drapes over his head*
Mistress Discipline: Now clean up these machines as you will clean up Donzig on this cruise. We do not want people thinking you are some kind of Neanderthal.
*DT sheepishly looks around at the machines all glistening in his sweat and scratches the back of his head*
Death Trap: Right. If I walked out with this place like this, the hotel would surely have some questions…
Mistress Discipline: This is not your usual behavior, Death Trap. Usually, you accept the barbs Chaos throws at us and move on. This was an almost innocent suggestion and you stormed off. Are you sure you are alright?
