Renegades of Wrestling!, owned by long time indy veteran Derek Defy, made it's Edmonton debut to a raucous crowd of just under four hundred. Though completely papered the crowd was hot the entire evening. Edmonton was once a hot bed of wrestling under NEO Wrestling in the early 2000's and fans were eager to see the squared circle back once again. The warehouse based set up was spartan, blue taped ropes, blue ring aprons and a simple fence at ringside. Black curtains were in a corner and sponsors' banners were scattered around. The sound and lighting seemed a notch about the rest of the presentation, however, so hopefully a sign of visual improvements to come. No merch table had been set up as the lineup was completely secret, for reasons no one was quite sure of. Rumors, however, were swirling of some foreign faces seen at the nearby International Airport!
The show got straight into the action with a six man tag match to start! Puff, Puff Pass were the first out, bursting from a cloud of... uh... smoke. Their gimmick is pretty obvious. The pair, twins, look like Soundcloud rappers, heavily tattoed with bright green and yellow hair respectively. They wore baggy, colorful and shiny pants and loose tank tops. They were joined by Steve Spearman, a lawyer gimmick who wrestles in a full suit, somehow. Perhaps he was there to make sure his clients didn't break probation? Eerie music played next as the lights darkened and the wrestling smart fans lost their minds... it was FULL SPEED's 666! Led by the super popular Darkness Kitty! came Super Darkness Panda and Necronomicon. Kitty! hissed and prowled at ringside, Panda growling and making mocking bear swipes at anyone (kids especially!) who got too close and Necronomicon did his usual magician-y parlor tricks. The match was a fun affair, more gimmick then substance but not without it's share of excitement and daring spots. Puff, Puff, Pass and Spearman are relatively green compared to the tenured Japanese trio but gave it their all. The twins hit repeated falling splashes from the bottom rope onto Necronomicon in one well received spot before tagging in Spearman who had his bell rung by an ear clap from Panda. 666 tagged in and out, showing a high level of experience, raking Spearman's back over and over... even though he had a suit on. Once they realized that, they tore off his jacket and shirt... only to find another shirt and tie underneath that! Spearman did stop 666 several times, bringing out a book and complaining to the ref (and showing her) proof they had broken the rules. Able to make a break, Spearman clobbered Kitty! with the book and tagged out. The action only got faster from here, Spearman nearly getting the win with, you guessed it, a spear but he wasn't the legal man and Panda showed him the rule in the book. The twins entered, hitting a HIGH (get it) double lifting powerbomb on Panda but that wasn't enough. The match was put away with a crossed armed powerbomb from Kitty!, the Cat Nap, to a loud cheer! The audience showed appreciation for all six after the match, 666 hanging out a bit longer to make sure everyone went home happy.

The next match was quite the contras, this between a pair of big men. Caveman Brody is just as you'd think. He plays a caveman gimmick, single strap singlet with tiger print, bare feet and he's hairy as hell and even sports some small bones tied into his pony tail and beard. He's pretty imposing even under 6 feet but in the high two hundreds. Strapping Young Lad is SUPER jacked and tatted up. He wears torn camo shorts, heavy boots and comes out in spiked leather. He's a bassist for a Vancouver extreme metal band and took his name in tribute to his hero Devin Townsend. These two had a heck of a big man match, both showing impressive power and neither afraid to take risks. Some were a bit awkward as neither are super experienced and tried to force fancy spots they didn't need to do. SYL did pull off a crazy standing moonsault and then a second rope moonsault. The finish was pretty crazy as Caveman hit a back breaker, then a front slam and then held on, picked Lad up and lifted him up in an impressive show of power, hitting a Samoan Drop for the win with the Bam Bam Bam. So far it looks like Renegades is all about flash and gimmicks in their presentation.

Back from Japan Derek Defy was back again with long time tag partner Kyle Krush! The two took on local deathmatch icons Shoko and Krusher Kruel in a battle of cross border proportions. Shoko in a ponderously huge man with a powdered white face with long black hair and wears all white. Krusher is a big man, typical deathmatch look but popular in the scene. To no one's shock this IMMEDIATELY went to hell, with the two deathmatch brawlers taking the pair outside and around the building, beating them head to tail. Larger and meant for brawling, the pair had a long advantage until it got back to the ring. Krush was able to hit a big dive (and at his size it was something!) followed by Defy hitting a moonsault to the outside to finally lay everyone out and get the match back in their favor. Crowd favorites, Krush and Defy worked Kruel over to the point where the crowd finally wanted Shoko and when they got him, blood flowed. The massive man came in and went to work, immediately taking out the referee (by throwing Krush into him) and bloodying both with skewers and chair shots. The crowd didn't know what to think as the violence seemed to escalate with a table of light tubes brought out. Krush managed to save the day, moving it to the side and stopping Kruel from putting Defy through it, the pair instead cutting them off. Krush threw a chair at a kneeling Shoko before Defy hit a pair of running double knees, finally getting the win. The two crawled off leaving the ring a mess.

Intermission time! The crew cleaned the ring, washing the mat and giving it a solid sweep. Merchandise was out and fans could get pictures with wrestlers from the opening matches. 666 had a giant lineup but Strapping Young Lad seemed very popular with many as well. Hopefully Defy was made aware of this! Speaking of Defy, bandaged up and still covered in blood, he was the first person to hit the ring after intermission. He said he wanted to keep the crowd in suspense but couldn't wait! He then introduced FULL SPEED owner Saturo Sato, much to the surprise of many. Not only did Sato appear but next up came Irish deathmatch star (not in wrestling gear but definitely with a beer in hand) TOK O'Connor the new DIE Bloodyweight Champion! Defy then announced that he wasn't just in Japan for a match and Renegades wasn't just randomly opening. They had a plan and it's called Ring of Fire Wrestling! It is a conglomerate of wrestling companies based mainly in the Pacific who will work together to promote professional wrestling and share talent amongst each other. Also announced, but not shown... The Ring of Fire World Championship! Details were to be announced in the future. How much money DID Defy make on crypto?!
Next up we had well known local MMA competitor turned pro wrestler, Doug Jackson, making his way to the ring first. He was adorned in normal MMA gear: gloves, shorts, t-shirt littered with sponsors. His entourage brought out an ice bucket and stool, warming him up as his opponent entered: "The Seitanist" Noah Butler! The crowd exploded as Butler has made quite the name of late, the "hot indy star" of late. He wore a green "devil" mask and a long green jacket adorned with spikes to the ring. His in ring gear was much simpler, black boots and a devil horned face adorned shorts. No knee pads, no wraps, nothing else. Very simple. His in ring work was anything but as this match was definitely a showcase for him. He rode Jackson into submission after submission and showed some English style striking with uppercuts and his Japanese influence with hard low kicks. Jackson made a comeback near the end of the first round with a big double leg and slam, going for ground and pound. He survived a counter into a triangle choke with arm bar. He opened hard in the second round with lefts and rights, almost scoring a KO. Butler shook it off, the Seitan-ist reversing a choke hold into an octopus like hold, adding a choke hold to the dastardly equation for the tap out. Butler looks absolutely like a star in a dominant win and his experience showed through.
"The Seitanist" Noah Butler d. Doug Jackson 5:59
After that quick match it was main event time and holy crap did it deliver in ways I can't do justice! First out was local legend Rosco Riggins! A multiple time champion across several promotions, the veteran of thirty years had recently hinted at a ring return and here it was. He was thicker then ever with a shaved head and thick black beard. He sported a sleeveless fully body suit, open at the chest, showing off his powerlifted physique. The clinks of metal being lifted introduced his partners... DEADLIFT! The quarter from FULL SPEED came out and what a team this would be! The Gamma Hulks; Shin and Nosawa came out first. After then came Deadlift leader Ultra Rhino followed by one of Japan's biggest stars Bull Shindo! What a quintet... but we weren't done! Bonnie Tyler's "Holding out for a Hero" hit and the crowd went ballistic for indy wrestlings favorite group: MEGA Gurentai! First came their leader HERO Ishikawa! One of the most popular JHW's of all time, he recieved a hero's welcome (pun intended!) He beckoned out his team of "812% Sex Machine" Ikuto Yone, JHW star Junya Kontano, the powerhouse and sumo champ Quake Honda and mohawk wielding Perra Punka and finally HERO Mascara. The fame of MEGA Gurentai can't be over reached. Edmonton was besides themselves with this appearance, considered one of the "smartmarkest" of all wrestling cities. This match was spot after spot. Deadlift used their power and base to set up for wild antics of MEGA Gurentai. It was non stop action, MEGA Gurentai taking quite a beating from the powerful group assembled before them. The battle was definitely focused on the obvious rivalry of Yone and Shindo for the FULL SPEED High Gear Championship but Riggins was built as a strong focus, taking out the entirety of Gurentai with exploder suplexes at one point, including Mascara and Punky at the same time! The finish came after a wild exchange of signature move after signature mov. MEGA Gurentai looked to be on top, isolating Gamma Shin, only to fall to a fiery Shindo comeback. However, in the end it was Yone and Nosawa isolated and Nosawa fell to a hip attack, whipcord hip attack and a hip swivel spinning double underhook face driver for the one, two, three.
