'Sheep can befriend a hungry wolf only for briefly.'
Donzig's voice hissed from the darkness, and then the gleaming mask of the Scourge came into view and focus. He leaned back slowly on his carved chair, and a hand lifted absently with a wave of his fingers. He said nothing, staring into space before he spoke once more in that cold, empty voice.
'Oh, Adrienne, do you think you are the first fly who landed on the web of the Von Krauss and thought they were your friends? Or do you think you are more clever then they are? A wise man once said once said, wisdom is bleak. And you have the confidence of youth all over you. I can smell it. Ask Goth, if you can catch him when he is lucid, ask him how trustworthy Armand is! Ask the Founder if you can find him! Ask anyone if the gifts of the Von Krauss come without strings, without price! Ask Jakie what the Von Krauss did to him before I made him free.'
Donzig snorted a laugh at that, and he rubbed his fingers together absently as he watched them.
'I took his eye to grant him wisdom, and instead of being a man? Jakie chose the yoke, he chose the lash, he chose to bow down to them.'
A shake of that head, and his hand dropped.
'Ask me, Adrienne. You see I consider myself the cleverest man in the entire XHF! My paranoia is the stuff of legends! And yet, and yet I trusted Armand and the Usurper. I believed in them and their lies! Their sweet honey words, and I told myself--'
Donzig's voice became high and mocking.
'They would never betray me! I am special! We are like family! I am too smart for that! Too clever for such things!'
His fist slammed down on the carved arm of the chair, and he leaned forward with a snarl from behind his mask.
'WELL, HERE THE FUCK WE ARE!'
The Scourge rose from his seat, nearly flinging it over as he started to stalk back and forth. His long leather coat snapped in his wake, and he shook his head as a hand swept out at his side as though commanding the camera to follow. And he stormed back and forth, then paused as a hand lifted to sweep back his hood.
'You say you are young? Well, that is clear because you have alot to learn! You see as soon as you outlive your purpose, as soon as you are in their way? The Von Krauss will turn on you, they will rip your pretty carcass to pieces! If it ever comes down to you or them? They will always pick them, Adrienne! But, since you have made a choice? Good luck, sweetpea!'
Donzig turned, and he lifted his hand to wipe his wrist across the slits of his mask before he shrugged.
'And no doubt, no doubt, the Von Krauss or some of these other peasants that lurk in the low places of the XHF have already told you about me. They have already told you that Donzig is insane, that Donzig is cruel, that is Donzig is savage! That Donzig LIES! Well, my dear child, let me promise you one thing! Unlike people who walk around here like they are the good guys, and that they do no wrong? Unlike these people who do shitty things and excuse them? I know what I am, and I would not deign to hide it like they do! Everyone knows that one day, sooner or later? Their usefulness to the Scourge will end, and then?'
A hiss.
'Let's not dwell on such unpleasantness.'
Donzig started to pace again, and he sniffed.
'I enjoyed your mocking of my name, I have never had that happen before. I understand that to say a thing's name to give it power, and so people mock what they fear. What they can't understand. That they say fudge the names of the things that they have no power over, that they hate, to try and make these things less. But I am the Great Dark, Adrienne. I am the Wonder and Terror of this age, and when I leave this place? There shall not be another creature like me again! I have as many names as I have victims, I have as many names as you have fears, weaknesses, eh? And so you can call me whatever you want? At the end all will fall before the throne of the King of Ashes, and they wil beg Death in High Places for mercy!'
A sniff, and Donzig tilted his head.
'I am incapable of mercy, Adrienne. Someone should have told you that.'
A shrug, and he waved a hand.
'Now as to the rest of your statement. I don't overlook you because you have chosen to ally yourself with the people were foolish enough to call down my wrath! I don't overlook you because you chose to join with the Von Krauss on the same day that they threw themselves before the lions! Because make no mistake, Adrienne, we are fucking lions. I am not overlooking you because you decided to be Esmeralda's young girl! I am not overlooking you because you're an actress, young, pretty, or a girl--'
A pause, and Donzig grunted.
'--we are not doing this girl bit again.'
A wave of his hand.
'Or even because you are French. I am overlooking you, because I overlook everyone! You see Adrienne, I am everything I say I am! I am inevitable, and I am the Great Dark! And nothing you can do, nothing you can say, nothing you will do? Will change that, because the future is ash! The future is mine! The future is chaos, it is a long fall into the Void! It is nothing, it is cold and empty, and it belongs to Donzig-gun!'
Donzig stared, and he turned away.
'Adrienne, see you soon.'
