What a difference time can make. Why is that? Because the last time we saw them - which itself was only a couple days ago - Maxine Salt and Pepper Hutchinson were loud, braggadocious even, but now the pair are sitting on a metal folding chair each. Both looking worn down and damaged even as one of Miss Salt’s hands clutches onto her side while Miss Hutchinson leans forward with a slight wince.
Pepper Hutchinson
“Yo there…I think there may have been a bit of a misunderstanding. Some people are thinking that because we’re the newest pair in this Tag Team Championship gauntlet that we’re not taking the Tag Team Champions seriously at all-”
Maxine Salt
“Yea…yea…yeah…”
Pepper Hutchinson
“And that is not the case at all-”
Maxine Salt
“No…no…no…”
Pepper Hutchinson
“We know that they’ve been arguably unstoppable as Champions. Mr. Blood wouldn’t have set up a gauntlet in the first place if he wasn't so desperate to find somebody, anybody to be frank, to be the ones to take the gold away from them. Fortunately he has finally found the ones he dreamt of in the form of us. But we’re not a pair of idiots; we do take notice of things…like how The Bastards did fight hard to a deserving crowning moment at Wrestle UK’s A New Dawn. Or when they capitalised on their opponents not knowing the basis of tag team wrestling - you know, pinning the actual legal person - at Halifax. As well as the time they showed their willingness to cheat during the Battle of Britain and how happy they are to get disqualified when they doubt their own ability to win at the start of the ye-”
The shorter woman ends up coughing before wrapping her arms around her chest. Seeing her friend in pain Maxine gives off a brief look of worry before deciding to speak up to let her partner rest.
Maxine Salt
“I know that time can change a lot of things but it's almost sad in this situation. Don’t get us wrong, they - including the tall geriatric geezer - deserve to be acknowledged as the greatest group of the last year, but it really shows with this lot. Rob and Frank showed themselves to have the heart of lions when called upon and even showed everyone how smart they are when working together to pin Tweedle Dum together…but then that intelligence seems to shift towards cunning when they used some tights to beat Brother Sucks. With strength, brains and slyness how could anyone hope to find a way through the seemingly impenetrable defence…
But then New Year’s Brawl happened.”
For a brief moment our vision flickers to a shot of a hand holding the back of Maxine and Pepper’s heads and smashing them against a brick wall before flickering back to the pair in front of us.
Maxine Salt
“The headbutt heard around Britannia. For the moment Frank’s face struck the official everything became clear. In that very moment all the tenacity, the intellect and the craftiness were exposed as nothing more than a charade. Mere lies to produce the illusion of the greatness everyone wanted to believe in…after all, who wants to see their heroes fall? Too bad they got to see it all as the moment headbutt connected, The Bastards have truly shown themselves worthy of the name they’ve given themselves. For there was never any inner strength in the first place, nor was there any true intelligence…hell the first time we saw anything true about them is how two-faced they were in London since the moment, the very moment, that headbutt landed everyone saw who The Bastards really are. Not Champions that deserve to be called Champions…
But instead a pair of pathetic little boys whose own desperation, which has helped them from day one, has screwed them over as no amount of deprived scurrying can save them from the gauntlet turning into Dante’s Inferno…and, spoiler alert, Dante loses the prize in the end and so will they. So, like Pepper said earlier, time can change a lot of things and seeing how much the Champs have changed from pretend heroes to unmasked frauds - who might as well forfeit their belts to spare anyone the embarrassment of seeing the rest of their supposed impenetrable defence crumble to dust - is so sad…
That we can’t help but feel pity for them.”
The taller woman chuckled after saying her last few words, which itself proves to be a bad move as she found herself unable to not cough out a little blood afterwards
Pepper Hutchinson
“But pity won’t stop us from making them, and everyone else we have to face, Sleepless in Seattle from trembling nightmares of their failure and making ourselves Sleepless in Seattle from our own Tag Team Championship Celebration. Why? Because while this match is indeed going to be our professional wrestling debut-”
Suddenly a montage flickers across our eyes…Pepper and Maxine’s face struggling to hold their breaths as a hand holds them underwater. Light tubs repeatedly shattering across their backs and ribs. The pair being pinned between two beds of nails. And both women being forced to do push-ups across burning coal at the threat of a bamboo cane…what kind of abuse is this? All we know is that the montage ends with Pepper and Maxine limping into a room and sitting on a pair of chairs before we flicker back to the sight of a much less battered, bruised and bloodied - though still worn out - duo sitting in front of us with an equally determined look on their face.
Maxine Salt & Pepper Hutchinson
“No one is taking this gauntlet more seriously than us.”
The scene suddenly flickers off to a fully empty room with the letters ‘SP’ scribbled across the back wall before we cut to black.
