Silence. Darkness.
The scrape of a match being struck. Light.
Before it can burn out between his fingers, Jack Gaines lights the candle in front of him. The flickering flame illuminates him from below.
Have you ever heard of altruistic fear? Simply put, it is the concern you feel that a calamity may befall not yourself but someone else. It’s a natural thing; the product of the love and care most of us feel for those closest to us. I look at the match we’re having at Phantom of Guilt and that two word phrase resounds in my mind like the tolling of a bell.
Altruistic Fear.
Hands either side of the candle, planted on the table it sits upon, Jack leans closer to the flame, his face clearer, the sincerity obvious.
Even if today was the first time you’d ever heard the phrase, I know it has to resonate for you both. How can it not? You love each other, even if you’ve sometimes struggled to define exactly what that love is. You have fought side by side, protected and helped one another as you’ve held those tag titles in the greatest reign the XHF has ever seen. But what’s coming March 31st; OMEGA Razor Board Deathmatch…
He trails off, shaking his head.
Death Trap, you more than any of us know Mistress Discipline’s talent and drive. You know she’s tough and skilled, capable of holding her own in a match. But this isn’t just a match, and that’s something else you know. This is steel honed to the keenest edge, blades carving flesh and spilling blood again and again. This is a blind and naked walk through a killing field. This is a world you have fought in before but it is not one she is ready for. No matter her talent, no matter her bravery, she simply isn’t prepared for this.
Mistress Discipline, your love for your partner is clear for all to see. He deserves it too. He’s not just a handsome fellow in fine shape for his age, but a skilled and decorated veteran. He’s held so many titles, not least of all the X*Crown itself. But an intelligent woman like you knows that time makes fools of us all. Every one of us in this industry has a bump card, and we all will fill it. If we’re lucky, we’ll still be able to walk out that door under our own power. If we’re unlucky they’ll be carrying us out under a sheet. Just how much does DT have left blank on his card? Enough not to overfill it in this kind of atrocity?
Jack gives the viewer a look of sad doubt to answer the question.
I’m not saying this as some attempt to scare you or rile you up. This is me laying the cards out on the table. Why?
His face shifts to a smile of equal sadness.
Altruistic fear.
Now we all know enough about me to know that I cannot feel love. Care, though? Care is still something I consider. It is something I can have for others. And believe it or not, I do care for you. I respect you in the way that only opponents can. We fought at Supremacy, and you won. But that was a match fought under standard rules, without weapons. On March 31st, the knives are out. You fight on our terms, on our turf. You do not deserve the things that will happen to you, that we will do to you. The anger of Kira Izumi and the sins of the XHF Network should not have to be borne by Top of the Class, but nevertheless will be. The thought of how far this will go… of how far we will go…
He closes his eyes, words seeming to fail him. He inhales deeply, steeling himself before continuing.
I am afraid for you.
In sudden movement, Jack raises a hand and slams it on top of the candle, snuffing out the flame and returning the view to darkness. In that darkness we hear his final words.
But fear will not stay my hand.
