As usual there was a bunch of texts to reply to when Sam got back to the locker room. Everyone from Philly, Riley, their family, they were all ecstatic. They were always there for them, win or lose, but this was more than that. They'd somehow made it to the main event of Night of Champions. They would have been happy to keep texting all night - not even about their victory, just to be there with them - but they kept being reminded of their match the next day and being told to go to bed. They would have done anyway, although maybe not quite so early. There's so much work to be done. As much as they'd love to celebrate, they know what they have to do and they're happy to do it. However as they slept in their hotel that night, they dreamt they were home.
They left for the gym on Monday morning, getting their workout off to a start with a run. They got there not long after it opened at seven. It was their first time in this one. They were alone at first but by nine they'd been joined by a few others. They all kept to themselves, even though at least one seemed to recognize Sam by his smile. Before they got to take their first break, they heard their name being spoken in the distance. They stopped hitting the bag and looked over to see a pair of police officers. As Sam locked eyes with theirs, they didn't know what to think as they approached.
Officer: Hi, Sam.
Sam: Hi.
Officer: I'm Audrey. This is Craig.
Sam smiles at both of them. They give small smiles in return.
Audrey: Do you want to come with us... somewhere private?
Confused, Sam looks past them to see two people staring at them. When they meet Sam's stare they quickly go back to what they were doing.
Sam: Why? What's wrong?
The officers' nervousness is now plain to see on their faces. Craig looks behind him, making sure the others are out of earshot.
Craig: Sam... your mother... your birth mother... died last night. She was murdered.
Sam stares at them, their face vacant. Sadness soon grows in their eyes and tears start flowing.
Audrey: Sam...
Their eyes turn to Audrey. Craig stares at them stunned.
Audrey: I'm so sorry, Sam...
They don't answer, but just stare with helpless, panicked eyes. They give a muffled sob. Audrey stays quiet, then watches in surprise as a tight anger emerges on their face. They storm past them both.
Audrey: Sam!
Everyone in the gym watches as Sam, still weeping, heads for the exit, breathing wildly and ignoring everyone.
