‘You know all of us in what was Donzig-gun have something we hate. And what we hate?’
The voice spoke from the darkness, calm and impassive. Like it had all the time in the world, it sounded serene, untouched, and untroubled. And something shifted in those shadows before the voice murmured again.
‘Are heroes. Heroes make a lot of claims don’t they? They sit around and pretend they are different, better, and more superior than others. They walk around and claim they can change things, that they can make things better, that they can inspire others to be like them. But in the end?’
The voice laughed.
‘They are just like the rest of us flawed. They want us to think they are perfect, that they are better, that the things that drive the rest of us? Don’t touch them. That their motives are pure. I once tried to be a hero, but the world? Oh, the world showed me the lie.’
That voice grew angry, and something scraped across the floor of the blackened room.
‘The world left me to die, to rot in a cell, and I tried to tell myself that it was not their fault! They just couldn’t see what I was! And you know not one person came to save me! There were no heroes. When my cell door opened, and I was freed? It was not a hero.’
The voice drifted off, and then hissed.
‘It was him. The Scourge plucked me from darkness, and he made me strong once more. To be his weapon, to destroy his enemies, to punish them! To expose the heroes, to cut away the lies, to expose that inside? We are full of darkness, of sin, of death! And now he is gone, he is defeated. I serve a new master.’
Luthor Carbrey stepped from the darkness, and he reached up to tug on his leather jacket. Popping the collar as he smirked through his beard, and his dark eyes narrowed.
‘But I still hate heroes. And that brings me to you, Eron Hunter.’
Carbrey paced forward across the dust covered floor, and he shrugged before he lifted a hand to smooth his hair.
‘The former WUK Commonwealth Champion, the former XHF JHW Champion, the man who took the West Koas Championship from the Sheik! A man who is undefeated for over a year, a man who has never been pinned or submitted in WUK before Armand! Oh, I know you. But worst of all? You’re a hero.’
He spat, smirking as he looked up again.
‘You walk around here and act so humble, so very humble don’t you? Because you’re a hero. You don’t take the easy way out do you? You don’t cut corners, or bend the rules! And you never give up! But I see you, Hunter.’
Carbrey crouched down, and he leaned forward as he smiled an evil smile.
‘You were angry, you had righteous wrath in your heart, and what you want is Armand. You can’t forget what he did to you, what he tried to take from you! And now you won’t stop, you want justice! Well, good for you.’
Carbrey leaned back, disappearing into the shadows again as he shrugged.
‘But that anger? It’s going to let me destroy you, Eron. You see I want you so angry, I want you so mad, I want you to bring all that righteous fury! Because inside that ring in Houston? I am going to show you what I think of heroes! I am going to show the entire world, the entire XHF, that the myth of the hero, the myth of Eron Hunter is a lie! It’s a fucking lie!’
He slipped further into the shadows, and he laughed again.
‘And then when you are finished? When I am done exposing you for what you are? Flawed. Weak. Just a man. I will leave what is left of you for Armand, because Hunter? It’s time you learned what I already know.
There are no heroes in the Void.’
