The leaf fell down. It’s dead now. Dead and on the ground. It can go no lower- wait the wind picks it up and it falls into a ditch. Now, it can go no lower.
All around me, leaves fall. Honestly, I’m impressed they held on this long. The inevitable end was always coming for them… but I suppose climate change has pushed it back and the tree has tried to twist out the last bit of energy juice, sucking everything from the leaf until it slowly meets its end on the branch. But it’s dead now. It has fallen and it won’t get up.
“-And I told you: he lost, we didn’t! CAR is in a great place and our rep made it further than most. The X* Crown will find its way here eventually. In the meantime, I’m happy to have someone occupy Stabby Sainovic.” Memaw comes round the bend of trees with Uncle.
He shakes his head. “He wouldn’t need distractions if you didn’t antagonize him.”
Memaw peers into the trees. “I’ve been around these types of people longer than you’ve been alive. I know what’s safe and pointing the GUNS away from us is safER.”
He throws up his hands. “How many times do I have to explain he’s not in GUNS.”
The older lady looks at her son. “Every time we go to GUNS, he’s there. You clearly haven’t been paying attention. I know their collective don’t see us as a threat. I intend to keep it that way. CAR is building up our roster of actual wrestling talent and we will have the X*crown… eventually.”
Uncle looks into the woods where I stand. “And does this mean you won’t be sending your grandbaby to slaughter again?”
Memaw snorts as I hold still to hear the answer. “I’ve never sent my grandbaby to slaughter. I know what she’s capable of.”
They’re silent for a moment as they look between the trees. Then Memaw sees where my uncle is looking.
“There you are! It’s about supper time and I made biscuits. Well, I helped Abby make biscuits. And there are still some left for supper. Also, I wanted to talk to you about something.”
Uncle growls and storms off.
The wind sweeps up the leaves in the ditch. They rise like a flock of birds and soar higher than they ever went as part of the tree.
