The Hunger Games ended with Katniss Everdeen leading a bunch of rebels and the end of President Snow. Well how did it all really start? In Hunger Games: Songbirds & Snakes you get to see how President Coriallus Snow began his rise to power. There's an expression that goes "Villains are not born. They're made." and thus it describes President Snow. Of course I read an article years ago which mentioned Donald Sutherland saying that Snow wasn't really a villain. He's absolutely correct on that because Snow was a naive teen from the prominent Snow family chosen as a mentor for The Hunger Games. He encounters his charge Lana Jane Beard, who competes in the arena and unknownest to him is a member of the rebels out to overthrow the government. Anyway, he tries his best to assist her by cheating but it only gets him in trouble and he is forced to serve his punishment in the armed forces and he continues his descent into the world that will become his destiny.
Snow learns betrayal when he reveals his bitter rival Plink is working for the rebels and betrays him. He finds that the woman he loves or thought he loved betrayed him and kills her and well you know what's going to happen afterwards. I enjoyed this prequel since it shows future President Snow wasn't such a bad guy but just someone who felt betrayed and he takes matters into his own hands. Tom Blythe is the perfect young Snow with his Val Kilmer like expressions and dialogue delivery especially in the intimate moments with his mother and his association with his future mentor played by academy award winner Viola Davis which is quite fun. Peter Dingle is so fun as the drunken match maker, whom I thought was going to go all Game of Thrones. I admit the movies length was a bit long but it went fast enough to not even notice. I hope they stop there and not try to extend this franchise but to use another line in a newspaper I read years ago "Villains never die. Especially if they are good box office." Yeah I expect this to be a trilogy of prequels but hopefully not sequels.
