There was a scene from Woody Allen's Stardust Memories where he he's talking to an alien and he asks what he should do and the alien responds "If you are going to make a movie. Tell funnier jokes." Unfortunately, nobody suggested that with Aquaman and the Lost kingdom. This is a patchwork of various other superhero and other action movies from previous years. Jason Momoa reprises his role as Aquaman and this time he is a father raising a son while at the same time he's ruling Atlantis, which he considers his full time job and gets a humorous laugh from the audience. Little does he know his old nemesis, Manta, is out to steal old abandoned Atlantean tech and as an added bonus he steals a weapon called "The Dark Trident. Why nobody called it something different is beyond me. Meanwhile, Aquaman is practicing his sonar blasting not realizing Manta's about to attack Atlantis and when he does he kicks the underwater king's butt and steals this power source leading Aquaman to seek revenge and who do you think he recruits to assist him....Yep his brother Orm, whom he imprisoned himself after the first Aquaman movie and springs him despite the monsters minding the prison and chase them but they escape. Later on Dr. Shin, played once again my Randall Park asks what Manta is doing and at one point sees him being seduced by the Dark Trident and at one point he touches it and sees who manta was talking too. Yeah he has an encounter with Necra, whom it turns out wanted to conquer Atlantis thousands of years ago. Meanwhile Aquaman and his brother Orm are walking through a forest bonding or trying to like Thor and Loki before encountering giant insects compliments of the mineral Manta stole and in one of the silliest chase scenes Aquaman destroys an old statue just to make a bridge for himself and his brother to escape. After a few more silly scenes one of which involves his son being kidnapped by Manta to be sacrificed to Necra.....Why not just use one of his minions it would be much less trouble. This leads to Aquaman confronting Necra and these two go at it like He Man and Skeletor or at least more like He Man and Groot before Aquanman and Manta
go at it. Aquanman and The Lost Kingdom takes generous bites out of Indiana Jones, Black Panther, Star Wars and...well you get the idea. Jason Momoa is once again proving to be The King of Bad Dialogue though he has competition from Dolph Lundgren who plays Necra. Randall Park hams it up in the few scene in this movie which I enjoyed the most since he's such a comedic actor. Ironically, I didn't see any lost empire unless they mean both Atlantis and the lost tech. I wish I could have enjoyed it more but who knows maybe if there is another it will be much better. I sure hope so.
