‘At Love and War, I reminded the entire WUK that this place runs on the whims of Donzig-gun. That everything here happens because it amuses us. And I walked into Love and War, and I showed Slam Three that he is his father’s son. That he is the product of failure, and I showed this entire company why I am the Commonwealth Champion.’
Sinclair Godfrey smiled slowly as she looked up, behind her bathed in the moonlight was the crumbling formal garden of Godfrey Hall. She swept along the pathways, stepping across the worn flagstones as her hand drifted across the roses that loomed along the path. Her coat snapped behind her, and she paused to adjust the belt on her shoulder.
‘But the work of the Baroness is not done! Because next week in Belfast, I will destroy another pretender to my throne. Another pretender who thinks they can take what is mine! And that is you, Preston Andre Reese. You are an arrogant, vain, foolhardy man with some small skill I grant you that.
But at the end of the day? You only fight for your own glory, you own pride, and greed! Like many before you, this title is just a trophy. It doesn’t mean anything to you, it is just something to feed your vanity. Granted, I think that unlike some other lesser creatures you wouldn’t throw it into the mob to prove some point about how awesome you are.’
A sneer, and she let her fingers drift across the plate before she shrugged. Her eyes narrowed, and she swept forward again with an absent shake of her head.
‘I have known men like you my entire life, Preston. Men who think their names give them power, that it makes them better, that their wealth and privilege mean something to the rest of us. If my parents had their way? I would have likely married a man like you.
But fate chose something else for me, it gave me a chance to reject that life and pursue my own dreams. The destiny that you take you for granted? The destiny thrust on you because your father was the great Sheldon Reese! I had to fight for it, I had to struggle for it every day! I had to earn that right! I gave up everything!
EVERYTHING!
For it! And so when we meet in Belfast? You can cry and whine all you want about how Florida Man stole this title from you! How you were robbed! But no, no, no, Preston there will be no more excuses when we face off. There will be no more words! I am going to do what someone should have done along time ago!
I am going to shut you up.’
Sinclair paused, a hand lifting as she extended a single finger. Her eyes narrowed, and she rolled her shoulders before tugging on that belt. And she turned, nodding to herself before she shrugged with a slow smile.
‘And of your friends try to get in my way, if they try to interfere? Well.’
The bushes rustled, and a few roses fell off to land on the dark ground. And the huge forms of the monsters known as Mormo and Moloch stood in the dim moonlight. Their faces were hidden behind gleaming black masks in the shape of skulls. And they stared at the camera silently even as Sinclair stepped between them, and she laid a hand on their shoulders as she leaned closer.
‘I have my own friends, Preston. And I don’t think the High Roller’s Club wants any business with them do you?’
A laugh, and she turned to walk away. The two hulking men following after her as they disappeared into the shadows of that tangled garden. And her voice called back, echoing across the ancient stones.
‘See you soon.’
