Cheez stood in his game room, his eyes fixated on the screen of his newly acquired Mortal Kombat 2 arcade one-up cabinet. Judging by his language, it was clear that he was growing frustrated with the game.
"God damn motherfucking Kintaro!" Cheez exclaimed, his frustration evident in his voice. "Thank God I own this machine; otherwise, I'd be pumping more quarters into this game than I think the country has quarters."
A wave of nostalgia washed over Cheez as memories of his childhood flooded his mind. "I remember when they had this set up at the local convenience store, just five blocks from the house I grew up in," he reminisced. "My mom would get so mad at me for wasting my entire allowance on trying to beat the game. I mean, I eventually beat it when my parents bought me the Super Nintendo version, but it's just not the same as the arcade version."
Cheez sighed as he reflected on the differences between the reproduction machine he now owned and the massive arcade cabinets he used to play on. "Those old machines took up a bunch of real estate," he commented. "And they were played so much that the marquee had been worn off by players' greasy hands. You couldn't even read the character's moves anymore."
As he paused his game and walked away from the machine, Cheez contemplated the evolution of gaming. "Ah, the days of gaming before the internet," he mused. "I miss the simpler times when we weren't worried about reviews or whether our favorite streamer played a game. We played games because they looked cool or because our friends enjoyed them, not based on whether they were indie or Triple-A titles."
"We had fun back then," Cheez continued. "We played horror games for the story, not just for jump scares. We played platformers for fun, not for aggravation."
Cheez took a moment to gather his thoughts and reassess his approach. "I'll try again in an hour," he decided. "Sometimes, when you keep failing, the best course of action is to take a step back and figure out what you're doing wrong."
His mind then shifted to a recent setback in his wrestling career. "Just like that game, I've been trying to reassess myself," he explained. "I've been thinking about not just my last match, but my entire career, trying to figure out where I've been going wrong."
Cheez acknowledged his disappointment in losing against Eron Hunter but saw an opportunity for redemption. "Now, I have a chance to prove myself again," he said. "Against five other incredible talents in a match that, honestly, sounds a lot cooler than the main event for St. Patrick's Massacre."
He expressed his skepticism about the main event match, where Kasper Van Zant would defend his title against six other opponents in an Elimination Chamber match. "Whoopty fucking do," Cheez sarcastically commented. "My match has a goddamn ladder in it. It's a cool concept, but it's also a challenge."
Cheez's mind raced with questions and strategies regarding the ladder match. "Do I play it smart with this match? Do I use my smaller size and speed to rush the ladder? Should I hope to reach the top before the other pods open? Is it viable to try and win before the rest of the combatants enter? Or do I have to come out with the title hanging from the top of the chamber?"
His thoughts turned to the physical toll the match would take. "What will it feel like to be suplexed off the top of the ladder, landing on the cold steel of the chamber? How will it feel to have a ladder flying at my face while I'm defenseless inside a pod?"
These questions and fears consumed Cheez's mind. He acknowledged that anyone in their right mind would have similar concerns. "Some people spend their entire lives chasing after championships and identity," he reflected. "But I know who I am, and I'm proud of it. I won't change for anyone."
Cheez refused to focus on his opponents, considering them mere obstacles in his path. "They are nothing more than your obstacles," he declared. "And just like in an arcade machine, if I fail, I'll keep popping in quarters and slowly improve myself until I sit on the top spot."
With determination in his voice, Cheez continued, "I will watch every failure down to a frame-perfect precision, until I can do this blindfolded. I want them to set a timer because I'm going to speedrun this ladder match. I just hope everyone else can keep up."
As Cheez prepared himself mentally for the upcoming challenge, his passion for gaming and wrestling intertwined, driving him to give his best and leave a lasting mark on both arenas.
