‘I am the way into the city of woe,
I am the way into eternal pain,
I am the way to go among the lost.
Justice caused my high architect to move,
Divine omnipotence created me,
The highest wisdom, and the primal love.
Before me there were no created things
But those that last forever—as do I.
Abandon all hope you who enter here.’
The voice of the Scourge hissed from the darkness, and then a match was struck before it lit a single candle. It was flung away into the darkness, and in the dim light one could see the faintest outlines of the chain link walls of the cell.
A hand reached up, and it slowly hung the gleaming metal mask of the Scourge from the wall of the cell. The black pits of the empty eyes stared down at him. They watched the ring with that cold knowing look.
Donzig leaned forward, and the shadows hid most of his face as he growled.
‘You know the words as well as I do do you not, old friend. Because both of us have stood in that place, we have both walked the long hard road into Hell.’
His head lifted, and he absently dragged fingers through his beard.
‘And you are right. We both deserve Hell don’t we? Our sins are stacked up to the fucking sky aren’t they, Fox. How many lives have we destroyed on our separate roads to Hell I wonder.
How many terrible things have we done!’
A shake of his head, and his cold eyes gleamed in the candle light as he absently let his fingers drift across the flames. They flickered slowly, head tilting as he stared at the fire.
‘But the difference is, Fox? You regret them, you want to change them, to redeem yourself. This Hell is your punishment, your penance, and you think you will somehow cleanse yourself.’
Donzig spat.
‘Pathetic.’
Donzig lifted a hand, jabbing a finger towards himself as he paced back and forth before the wall of the Cell. And he growled, the fire flickering and swirling in his breath as he kept stalking.
‘I would not change a fucking thing. I do not regret any of it! Not one fucking thing, Fox! And what is more? If I had the chance to do it all again? I would do it again!
The world made me what I am, and I will drag it into Hell with me! And there will be no fucking penance for me, no redemption, and no escape!’
Donzig jabbed the finger again, eyes wild as he hissed.
‘And you know inside, in your heart of hearts, in the black of night? You agree with me! You know I am right! But you sit there and deny the truth!
This is all a lie, it’s nothing! We are teetering on the edge of an abyss! And instead of joining me, instead of standing at my side, and breaking the fucking wheel!
You pick them! You pick them!’
Donzig scowled, and he looked away before he paced back towards the steel. His head lowered, and he stared away into the dark.
His hand lifted, finger tightening on the steel as he leaned against it. Shaking his masked head before he snarled.
‘But you see Fox we are going to Hell, and in Hell you pay for your sins. Because your sin isn’t that you oppose me, your sin is not that you reject the truth!
No, no, no.
Your sin is that you love this. You love you and me locked in this fucking fight! You live for this! Just admit it!’
Donzig shrugged, turning once more as he tilted his head. Hand lifting to drag across his mouth, and he stared into the flames of the candle.
‘My sin? My sin is that I will pick this every time, I don’t regret this at all, I don’t feel anything! All I feel is a desire to fucking choke you, to make you suffer! And that is worth any price!
I will punish you for your sins. For your pride, for your self serving guilt, for stealing the WUK Heavyweight title. But I already know the truth, Fox.
You and I? We are both devils, we are demons given flesh. Creatures of the Pit, the Fallen. But you see the difference is? One of us was freed in the fall, one of us rejoices. One of us revels in what he has become!
And the other wallows in guilt and laments.’
Donzig smiled that cold empty heartless smile, his eyes never flickering.
‘Your real punishment? The thing that will hurt you the most, more than anything I can do to you, will do to you, more than losing?
Is that when the door bangs shut you will hear the same sound that I do. The same words will echo in your mind. Because you and I?
We’re the same, Fox. I can just admit what I am. And those words?’
Donzig shrugged.
‘Welcome home.’
He lifted the candle, and he blew it out. A faint swirl of smoke as the light faded, and he started to laugh. That horrible wheezing creaking laugh like some terrible engine hissing go life. A soul less humorless cackle, and then his voice purred from the darkness cold and mocking.
‘Welcome. Home.’
