A van comes to a stop and the engine turns off. The camera hastily steps back revealing the LJ Electrical logo on the side of the van. We move over to the front of the van where a man steps out. He pulls a cigarette from his ear and a lighter from his pocket. He lights the cigarette and takes a long drag followed by a deep exhale. The man looks over at the camera and takes a second drag.
"It's you." Jay Cutter says after exhaling another billow of smoke.
"Long time no see." The voice behind the camera phone says.
"That's what happens when you are a working man. This is the time of year the good folks of Ohio are preparing for the winter. The leaves turn scarlet, the wind turns cold, and the farmers turn a profit. I take pride in my work. I know that every home I service is guaranteed to keep their family warm for the winter." Cutter says before taking another drag.
"Oh, that sounds...completely boring. But in a good way I swear!" the voice covers.
"I have work to do." Cutter gestures to the US Bank Arena that they are standing outside.
"That's what I'm here for! The fans haven't seen you in awhile, I want to document your big debut at the End of Days Tournament."
"My debut." Cutter takes his cigarette and flicks it into the gravel.
"This arena is a million times larger than the old VFW hall you were wrestling in." the kid behind the camera says.
"That was a sad moment. That was a hall that honored our veterans. Real heroes in this country. It's a shame what happened. I already told that VFW post that my company would do the electrical, free of charge, when they finance their rebuild. I wish I could offer more, but my greatest asset is my work ethic." Cutter says. He goes to the rear of his van and opens the door.
"It was a cool explosion though huh?" the kid asks a little ironically.
"No. No it wasn't. That is completely disrespectful." Cutter snaps back.
"I'm sorry....I just came to hear you talk about your match, please give me another chance."
"Fine. But, when the rebuild begins I expect you to get off your lazy millennial ass and put some real work in."
"I could use a paycheck-"
"You will be volunteering, understood?" Cutter gives him an intense look.
"Yes," the kid meekly replies back. Cutter grabs his bag from his van and shuts it. He begins walking towards the arena with the camera trailing behind.
"I've been thinking about this match for a while. Regrettably, I missed the last show because I had a huge project to work on. Luckily Mr. Ziko is very understanding. But, I've had this date circled for a while. This is my chance to put all my hard work inside and outside of the ring to good use. Do you know how many fans will be here this evening?"
"I don't know, like 15,000."
"No, not like 15,000. The arena is sold out. 14,453 fans with their eyes on me. I've circled today on my calendar, because I am ready. It's taken me a long time to come to terms with that, what being ready means."
"What does it mean?"
"It means that as a man, I will leave it all in the ring. Physically to be sure, but mentally and emotionally as well. I'll tell you, Alex Jones is a deserving opponent. He's been wrestling a long time, as long as I have been a working man. I am what you call a rookie by comparison. I am lucky to be sharing the ring with him. I'd count myself luckier were I to defeat him this evening."
"Do you not think you can do it?"
"The plague of man is doubt, and I am no different. My father used to tell me that, and it is only recently that I've come to understand what that means for me. You think that when you become an adult, then when you become a man, that insecurities like doubt fade away. But in fact, they become stronger as you get older and wiser. But as you get older and wiser you learn to push those feelings down and get the job done. Alex Jones, I am here to get the job done."
"That's really good, I can't wait to post this to the website-"
"I'm not finished. I know what you're looking for kid. You're looking for that killer quip, that smart quip, that direct insult. But I have none of those. I only have this. When I walk out on stage and check my watch, I know what time it is. When I check my watch, the XHF Network will know what time it is. It is time for Alex Jones...to go Up In Smoke."
Cutter grabs another cigarette from his pocket and puts it in his mouth. He pulls out his lighter and pauses.
"You tell them that. You tell them all that." Cutter says, before lighting his cigarette and pushing the door into the arena. The kid watches as the door slams shut in front of him. He takes a few steps back and lingers on a faded sticker. It should have read 'No Smoking' but instead, the no has been crossed out to read 'Smoking Inside Building'.
