Standing outside letting the sun hit my face was refreshing, though the wind was biting cold, but it wouldn’t dampen my mood, as today was the first day of the rest of my life.
Yes, I know I’m taking a huge gamble being a part of wrestling, let along being part of FWA, and now I need to somehow get to Russia, and that might be a problem.
How does someone with no past get access to another country? It seems like I must have a meeting concerning getting access to an emergency travel document that would allow me to leave this country and travel to Russia.
My palms are sweating as I wait to see the government official who deals with this type of claim. I know how important this meeting is to me as without this document then the plan to compete for FWA would be over before it started. The elderly gentleman with grey hair and clean shaven greeted me and asked me to take a seat, we began to talk about the reason for my travel, and the reason I don’t currently hold a passport, I talk about my memory loss, and that I have the doctor personal number if the office requires to talk to someone concerning my medical case. With his notes and the doctor’s number he asked me to wait in the waiting room and that he would consider my case, hours passed as I wait patiently staring at the door and for the grey hair gentleman to call my name. Finally, I was allowed to see the gentleman again, and he told me that he spoke at length with my doctor and that he is aware of my condition and that the doctor believes that this course of action might actually help with the cure of my condition, and therefore I had been accepted to have an emergency passport, he shook my head and wished me good luck
As I stand outside the government offices I look to the sky and mutter “I guess there is no turning back, I can no longer have my life on pause, I need answers to so many questions, so hopefully Russia has those answers”
I hail a cab, and giggle to myself that I actually learnt to do that by watching films in the hospital, a cab stops by my feet and I get in
“Where to love?” asks the cabbie with a strong accent but an accent I didn’t recognize
“I need to go to the Los Angeles International Airport please”
“Ah LAX, no problem Love, make yourself comfortable there, and I will get you as soon as possible”
As the cabbie drives I stare at the window at the sea of cars that are travelling on the highway
“So, where you heading to love?”
“Going to Russia”
“Russia, sounds like you are going for business”
“Yeah something like that”
I don’t know why but I didn’t want to mention that I was going to find my marbles
“Well I hope you enjoy yourself over there, and remember all work and no play makes you a dull Jane”
I smile at him….and thoughts go through my head “….Jane…..I wonder if I’m a Jane…..no still doesn’t feel right”
We arrive at the LAX, it’s a huge bright impressive structure, the huge letter of LAX is there for all to see, as I slowly walk towards the huge sliding glass doors, as I enter the world of hustle and bustle, so many people going in all different direction, pulling different sizes and colour of suitcase. It put me in a very nervous state, so many people so many talking at the same time, the noise of mindless chatter, the noise of the wheel of the suitcases, and faint sounds of arguments about being late for flights. I take a deep breath and make my way into the chaos of the airport traffic. I search for Aeroflot desk as the email that was set to me from the FWA company, informed me that they would leave a ticket for me at the desk, finally after walking past many company’s desks, I spot the one that I wanted, behind the desk was a gorgeous blonde roughly in her mid-twenties with aqua blue eyes, wearing an all red uniform with white collars and a little red hat and a red scarf with the words Aeroflot.
“Excuse me, I’m Lethe I believe there is a ticket left for me at your desk”
“If you wait a moment Madam, I will see if the ticket is here… as yes, we have a ticket here, have you any proof of identity?”
I pull out my emergency passport and show the rep of Aeroflot
“That will be fine Madam, here is your ticket”
She passes the ticket, and boarding pass to Lethe
“you need to go to the check in desk in 35 mins, and then you will be pass though security”
I sit on a nearby chair and watch the minutes fly by as the noise continues around me, finally time is up and I cue up waiting to be seen , when I do I hand over my ticket and boarding pass, in which they stamp and put my bag on the scales to be weighed and then its bye bye bag, and I walk to the security, I wait my turn as a stern officer waves me though the metal gate, with no beeps I continue to the waiting area. Finally, after an hour of waiting I gain the information of what gate I need to be at.
I’m finally on the silver metal bird, I’m not nervous as I expected to be, as this could be my first time on a plane, I mean it could be, then again, I could be used to flying, sometimes this is so annoying, you expect to be feeling and reacting one way and you seem to react another. I watch as the other passengers look around, looking for their seat number, some seem at ease, some look a little panicky, me I was relaxed, I think being outside the hospital was the best thing for me, or maybe im putting up a false front. Everyone on the plane the door shut and the red flight attendance help everyone with their carry-on luggage, and then they proceed with the safety demonstration, I know I should be watching but I didn’t care, why didn’t I care?
Finally after a handful of hours It seemed we have arrived at Sheremetyevo International Airport, it’s the early hours of the morning, it’s pretty quiet at the airport, so much difference from LAX, slowly I pick up my luggage and past though customs and there is a coloured gentleman with a large leather coat which reaches down to his knees with a sign “FWA”
I walk up to the gentleman, and ask “Firestorm Wrestling Alliance??” still half asleep as I seem unsure of weather that guy is for me or someone else
The gentleman smiles “You must be Lethe, welcome to Moscow, I’m been hired to make sure you get to the prison safely, my name is Fedor and I’ll be your driver”
“How do you know my name, Fedor” in the hope that he might actually know me
“Its quite easy, you are the only female on the FWA roster” replies the Fedor
“Wait what, im the only female? You kidding me?” there is a slight panic in my voice
“You didn’t know Miss Lethe, didn’t you check the roster before agreeing to sign up for FWA”
In all my excitement at getting out of the hospital and getting involved in wrestling, the thought of checking the roster didn’t occur to me, I wasn’t planning to stay long
“Don’t worry about it now, let’s get your bag and head out, you ever been to Russia before?
"
Have I? I glance around to see if anything is remotely noticeable, I mean there are those large china doll which must be 6-foot-tall in the lobby, you would have thought I’d would have remembered that, I scramble in my head to see if I have been here, yet again there is nothing, so I reply
“No, its my first time” I know that I could be 50/50 right, then again right now its seem like it the first time
“so, Lethe, you nervous to go to Butyrka prison?”
"Why would I be nervous to go to a disused prison, what they are ghost in there?”
“Lethe, you are kidding, no”
“What do you mean Fedor?”
“Butyrka prison, is a one of the largest prison in Moscow, it’s not disused it full of immates?”
Lethe face drops, as if the situation has become more serious
“Lethe, it seemed that you didn’t realise what you signed up for, am I correct?” Fedor had a look in his eye that seems to know the answer already
“Lethe, the majority of these guys haven’t seen a woman in years, are you ready for that kind of level of abuse?”
I never thought of that side, I thought it was an old prison, I never imagined that it was still a prison, and me being the only female entering a male prison, what have I left myself in for
I put my head in my hands and I start to cry, what have I done? Maybe the doctors were right, I should have stayed in the safety of the four walls, and now I’m entering a different set of wall and a different set of people
Fedor pulls over to the side of the road and turn around looking concerned
“I hope I didn’t scare you Lethe, please don’t tell Mr Kosloff that I’ve upset you, this is a big day for him as it’s his debut show, anyhow I didn’t think wrestler cried….”
“I don’t think wrestlers cry either, but I’m…..”
“You’re what?
I could tell him im not a wrestler and that mean I would escape this hell, but I need to know the truth I need to know who I am, and if it means walking into the place of hell so be it
“I’m just got allegories, dust allegories”
“Ah yes allegories, they are pretty common” replies Fedor but with a knowing tone that he knows that Lethe is lying
“Anyhow I could be driving the future FWA world champion” remarks Fedor
I start to laugh, and Fedor laughs as well
“To be honest Fedor, I doubt I get past the first round, whoever it is?”
“You mean you don’t know who you are facing” as Fedor gentle shakes his head in disbelief
“What am I supposed to know?” questions Lethe
“Well it has been announced for the last couple of weeks, didn’t you see the grand draw for the pairing”
Lethe shakes her head
“You will be facing Rob Wyatt”
“Ok that alright”
“You don’t know who Rob Wyatt is do you?” with a knowing look for Fedor
“Sorry Fedor I don’t know him”
Fedor could have said any name in the world and I would have said the same answer, I wish I could say yes I know him we have had amazing matches in the past, but I can’t I just don’t know the guy, or any other guy.
“глупая маленькая девочка” mutters Fedor
“Sorry what did you say Fedor”
“Sorry I meant to say that we are nearly at the hotel, Miss Lethe, I keep forgetting to use my English instead of Russian”
“That ok Fedor” as Lethe is smiling
I know that Fedor is lying, I know he called me a stupid little girl, but how do I know Russian? I’m not going to let on that I did know Russian, or maybe I know some phrases, is it possible that this isn’t my first time in Russia? This is supposed to be a place where I find answer not more questions
Fedor stops in front of a modest looking Hotel
“This is your hotel, we are only 10 minutes away from the Prison, have a good rest Miss Lethe and enjoy your stay”
Lethe thanks Fedor and walks slowly into the hotel, as she glances at the hotel with hanging baskets of flower near the doorway, its look clean and tidy, as she walks through the door to the lobby
“Good evening my name is Lethe I believe I have a booking”
“Yes we do, under FWA – lethe” replies an old lady with a mixture of red and green headscarf covering her grey hair “Here is your key, your room 45 is to the left “
Lethe thanks the lady as she takes the key and walks down the hallway towards the door 45, she spots the door, and slots the key in the hole and turns the lock as the door smoothly opens, she walks inside and see the bed with floral decoration duvet, drops her bags by the door and collapse on the bed, and takes a deep intake of breath
Lethe glances around and see a laptop with a yellow stick it notes on the front, property of FWA, but please make use of it
Lethe sits down in front of the laptop, and stares at the screen
“if only it was this simple to find out what’s going on in my head, just taps some keys and by magic my memories would be restored, I guess the smart thing is to find out about this Rob Wyatt”
Lethe enters the FWA website and looks at the roster, and click on Rob Wyatt name, and her face drops as she starts to read the information about Rob Wyatt.
“Oh my god what on earth have I let myself in for, the guy is a giant, 7’2 nearly 400 lbs, how on earth I’m I going to survive facing him?”
“I just wanted a warm up match, and I’m facing HIM, trust me I think I better be quick around that ring, I guess its too late to pull out. I hate to admit it but im scared, I mean who wouldn’t be facing someone much larger and taller than myself”
Lethe stands up and starts to pace up and down the room talking to herself
“Why didn’t I listen to the doctors? I don’t know if I can wrestle?”
She glances at the laptop screen, and then something catches her eye, and she begins to smile
“Doctor of Chaos, I leave a hospital travel half way around the world and the first person I got to step in the ring with is a dam doctor. I know I’m supposed to be talking trash about Rob, but they again I’ve never met him, well I don’t think I met him, I hope I haven’t met him, maybe he will recognize me”
“I thought a doctor was meant to heal people, yet this doctor by the sounds of him seems more intent in hurting people and what is a doctor of chaos? I mean chaos isn’t a physical form, you can’t practice on it, you can’t point to it and say that’s chaos. You think you are a doctor of chaos, then you would have some understanding my world has been in, you might be the doctor of chaos, but I’m living in a world of chaos, a world with holes and gaps, a world where there is no meaning to question, a world where I put my body on the line just to find out who the hell I am. Look Rob, I know you entered this tournament to prove how good you are, and to win the FWA championship, but not everyone has entered this tournament for the same reason. I’m not interested in the championship, I not really interested in winning this match against you, I’m more interested in walking out of the match after you have had your hand raised in victory. So good luck in the next round Rob, just please don’t hurt me too much”
Lethe stops pacing and sits on the bed and stares outside of the window
“What if?” she begins to talk to herself
“I know it’s a total longshot, I mean I did take down the great oak at the hospital, but what if I do go to the next round, does that prove I do know what I’m doing? Or would it prove I was lucky? Hey I could dream at least, for the moment, after tomorrow I could be back in the hospital, how ironic.”
