Episode 1 - Introductions & Old Favourites
So, following conversations between the cooler kids in this town I have decided to begin a regular feature on beer. Why? Well first of all, who doesn't like beer? If you don't like beer, I'm pretty sure that makes you a horrible person, I'm talking Hitler level horrible. And then there's also those who don't drink because they're tee total or straight edge or just plain stupid (I'll leave you to decide which category you fit into, Mongo). Joking aside, this came from a discussion a few of us were having on Discord, there's no podcasts that simply talk about beer, and when I say talk about beer I mean talk about what they like, don't like, and why. The only pods I'd ever find were pretentious jerks talking about layer upon layer of intricacies that frankly I just didn't understand. Good for you, you know about the scientific make up and process of beer, but I just want something I can relate to.
So out of the fires of that
So let's get straight into it!
Beer 1: Atlantic
Volume: 4.5%
Brewery: Sharps
Brewery Location: Cornwall
This is by far one of my favourite beers. The brewery is more known for producing pub favourite Doom Bar. For me Doom Bar is alright, it's a very safe ale to stick on a pump in a pub, but it's a bit boring for me. Atlantic however is a great beer. Given that it's at 4.5% it makes it not quite a strong beer, but not quite a session beer. It is however very easy to drink, it's light, and has a subtle sweet aftertaste. It's probably great for a beer garden, and definitely great after a meal. Overall for me it's a great pale ale that I would recommend to anybody.
Beer 2: Proper Job
Volume: 5.5%
Brewery: St Austell
Brewery Location: Cornwall
This is Alex's dad's favourite beer. He has friends who live next door to this pub in North Devon and he visits as much as possible in order to go to said pub that serves this beer on the pumps. I'll be honest, whilst this isn't my favourite beer in the world I can get why. A hoppy IPA with a crisp finish, it goes down pretty easy as well. There's no real surprises with this beer, it gets you pretty drunk very easily, for me it just lacks a bit more flavour, but it's a very solid option wherever you go. Interestingly, if you're into your hoppy IPA's, there is a beer the same brewery produce, called "Big Job", which I have tried a few months ago, sat at about 8.5% with a similar flavour to the Proper Job.
Beer 3: Gem
Volume: 4.8%
Brewery: Bath Ales
Brewery Location: Bath, North Somerset
Now this is what got me into real ale. We used to go to Bath Racecourse each year and they would have this on tap, one year my old man convinced me to give it a go as I was getting fed up with the lager on offer (Fosters...ugh), and I loved it. Gem is a bit more heavy bodied compared to the previous two, it is a bit more bitter-sweet, but well balanced. There's a slight nutty taste to it, and the malts come through quite well. This is another one of my go-to beers, but not if I'm on a session, it can sit a little heavy, but on a cosy night in it goes down super well. If you like a good bitter, then this is for you.
Beer 4: Hobgoblin IPA
Volume: 5.3%
Brewery: Wychwood
Brewery Location: Witney, Oxfordshire
Okay, the first of my actual reviews. I'll start by saying that I love what comes out of Wychwood, I may even do a feature on them in the future. Hobgoblin, Hobgoblin Gold, Fire Catcher, Dr Thirsty's No. 4 Blonde, all fantastic beers. So when I saw they had this IPA in the shop yesterday, I had to have a go! It had a similar taste to the Hobgoblin Gold, which suited me down to the ground, however as you'd expect with an IPA, there was a good amount of hops in there. Taste was good, bordering on floral, but I found that it didn't go down so well, there was something lacking in the finish which slowed me down, which was a shame. I can't put my finger on it either, but sadly I didn't take to it. I think it may suit somebody who is really into their IPA's, rather than somebody like me who can be quite picky with them.
Would I have it again? Perhaps, I'm always open to a second chance on things like this.
Score: 5/10 ... Anything more would have been showing a bias towards the brewery.
So there we have it beer fans. Please feel free to suggest, pass comment etc, and happy beer drinking you delightful drunks.
