Episode 2 - Animals
Wooo I'm committing to something! Week number 2! So as I mentioned last week, I'd only be trying two new beers a week, so this should be a bit shorter than last time. I will be doing some specials soon, with my trip to America in March there's going to be some fun to be had with that is one example I have.
Anyway, onto this week, I went to the supermarket yesterday and was hit with a bit of a problem, as evidenced here on discord:
And other than the one suggestion of "all of it" which was tempting, I was actually didn't know what I wanted to get! I decided to buy two beers hanging off a loose theme, because it's my show and I'll do what I like. So this week's very loose theme is "animals"...by which I've picked a beer with a pig and one with a fox on it. It's been a long week, okay?!
Beer 1: Firkin Fox
Volume: 4.6%
Brewery: Badger/Hall & Woodhouse
Brewer Location: Blandford Forum, Dorset
Went straight in on the theme with this one, animal name in the brewery as well as the beer. I've had beers from this brewery before, Tanglefoot as well as Fursty Ferret (some great names as well). This was a new one to me, though I think I've seen it before I've never thought to try it. I was very pleasantly surprised with this beer though. It was a very subtle bitter-sweet taste, not too heavy. The malts are described as "biscuity" on the bottle, and I'd be inclined to agree, and actually it's a really nice flavour. The only negative was that there was no real finish to it, which stops it from being a great beer, rather than a good one.
Would I have it again? Yeah, it's a really nice amber beer to have now and again, but I wouldn't be making it a regular.
Score: 7/10...Just needed something in the finish to get it higher.
Beer 2: Boon Doggle
Volume: 4.2%
Brewery: Ringwood
Brewer Location: Ringwood, Hampshire
There was no way I could resist getting a beer for an XHF-related show without getting something with a pig on the front. Ringwood have quite a cool range, all with more bacon on the front of each bottle. This was a craft blonde, and to be honest it was really, really good. It's not trying to be too clever at all, it's a simple, fruity ale. It's light, it's moreish, at 4.2% it's just outside of "session" category but it probably wouldn't stop me! Unlike the Fox, there's a better finish to this beer as well, very crisp.
Would I have it again? Easily, might even go back to the shop today and get more as they were selling them for half price.
Score: 9/10, it's not perfect, but this is a simple, but very satisfying beer
So that's what I've been drinking this week. Any suggestions or discussions welcome! Also, any ideas for themed weeks please let me know! Happy drinking!
