I’m not sure how I expected it to go…
The last year has been a lot different than the ones before. It’s been almost two years since he was injured and told he would never wrestle again. It hurt. From there he did everything he could to distance himself from the wrestling world.
This included the selling of his home and training facility. There was no reason to keep the status quo if he could never return to the ring. Then a miracle happened. A second opinion later and he was cleared. Just like that, Muru was going to take to the ring once more.
Bartender: Can I get you another?
The cute girl behind the counter points to the Bud Light in front of him. Muru only nods to let her know that would be appreciated.
It was a long road, and it wasn’t easy. It changed his outlook on life as whole. No longer was he just going to live in the moment and see what happens. Now he was going to plan for the future. He finally decided to give a relationship a try, even though most frown upon his choice.
When it came to actually getting back in the ring?
A roster spot in one of the biggest wrestling companies of the world, pretty nice deal isn’t it?
But it wasn’t the right fit.
The biggest and the best doesn’t always mean happiness.
The bartender brings him his beer and sets it down in front of him. She goes to turn away but then stops and turns back to Muru as he takes a sip from the new bottle.
Bartender: You alright?
Why wouldn’t he be alright? Just because he is close to finishing off his twelfth beer doesn’t mean there is an issue.
Muru: I’m just fine…
Bartender: If you need someone to listen, I’m here. It’s part of the job.
She flashed a quick smile at him.
If he was in the talkative mood, she’d have plenty of time to listen. The place is pretty dead, must be because it’s a Monday. On one of the TVs Spike Kane is doing what he does best.
Muru: I’ll keep that in mind.
There’s my new boss doing what he does best. I put my faith in him. I hope I didn’t sign up just to be part of some side project.
He looks up at the girl behind the counter. She seems to be lingering.
Muru: I’m new to town. I’m here on business. I don’t particularly like Boston.
Bartender: I take a little offense to that. So where you from?
Muru: Detroit…
There is a moment of silence.
Bartender: So what kind of business?
He points up to the TV.
Bartender: Professional wrestler?
A light bulb goes off in her head.
Bartender: I think I remember you from when I was a kid…
Muru: Maybe…
He finishes off his beer and sets the bottle down.
Bartender: Wow, that’s a long time!
He doesn’t need to the reminder. His body tells him every morning.
Bartender: It sounds like it would be a blast. So why do you seem so down?
Muru: I’m just missing someone…
Bartender: A girl?
He reaches into his back pocket and pulls out his wallet. Inside there is a picture that he shows the bartender.
Bartender: Your daughter?
Muru: Girlfriend…
Bartender: Oh…
Muru: It isn’t like that. She’s in college.
Bartender: Whatever makes you happy!
That ends what little conversation they had going.
Muru: Yeah…

My debut for Combat didn’t go as expected, but I guess that’s alright. I really wanted to put my best foot forward. I tried. I guess I bought into my own hype a little bit. Looking at the others in the match I figured my many years of experience would be enough to prevail.
I was wrong.
I forgot about one of the things that can even the playing field. Hunger. When it comes down to it. I wasn’t hungry enough. The first main event of Combat? It should have driven me to win, but I couldn’t do it.
That honor went to Ethan King.
But…
We all have a chance to make an even bigger mark in the history books. Starting this Friday, we are all on the road to hopefully becoming champions!
Rudolph Samson…
Even though it didn’t work out as planned, I was happy to be a part of the first ever Friday Night Fury! This is something you missed out on and I am sorry that you did. Every man and woman who were part of that show made history.
So as you make your debut I want to say one thing…
Welcome to Combat!
Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, it’s on to business. You might lable yourself a “nice guy” Rudolph, and I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. I like to think of myself as a pretty nice guy myself. I’ll smile, shake your hand, and I’ll play by the rules. I’ll do and say all the right things.
But…
I want to be very clear. I want to be the first ever Combat Heavyweight Champion!
I know that isn’t a groundbreaking statement. I’m sure I’m just echoing the exact same thing everyone else is saying. I also know that I’m not exactly one of the favorites to win it. Not after that first show. I know people are doubting me.
But…
I’m not doubting myself.
Rudolph the two of us are opening the show. That is going to be a blessing in disguise. I know what I’m capable of and we are going to start things off right. One of us are going to advance and still have a chance, the other?
It’s going to suck to be in your position Samson.
I might be a nice guy, but when that bell rings, it’s time for business. Sure I like to entertain the fans, but I think they will understand how important this is to me. When I hear them chanting my name…
Moo Roo! Moo Roo! Moo Roo!
It will give me the extra push I need to pick up the victory!
Last week I had hoped to bring back “The Greatest Show on Earth”, but I fell short. This week? I’m going to try again. I know if I’m at the top of my game, that the title is mine for the taking. It doesn’t matter who I have to face. I won’t be deterred!
Two men enter, but only one can move on!
I do wish you luck Rudolph.
In this match…
In your career…
But…
Friday Night?
It’s time for the brightest star to shine!
