Episode 4 - It's Beer, Jim, But Not As We Know It
First of all, I'm glad last week's episode generated a good bit of debate. There will definitely another Belgian beer episode in the future.
Onto this week and another weekend, another session or two. I had to keep notes this week because I was very much in a "I wish to get so drunk I pass out" mindset, we all need to blow off steam from time to time, right? And even more successfully there's been no hangovers, so double win pour moi! Anyway, let's move on to this week's two beers. I've decided to get two beers from brewery's we all know, but take one of their lesser known alternatives.
Beer 1: Spitfire Gold
Volume: 4.3%
Brewery: Shepherd Neame
Brewery Location: Faversham, Kent
So a lot of people over here will all know about Spitfire, it's a pretty national beer, and not a bad one either. However they do also have a gold counterpart, which is what I opted for first. What I found was that it was okay, it was a bitter sweet beer but there was a very woody taste that I found a bit off putting. Despite that, it was a light beer that went down pretty easily.
Would I have it again? Probably not, depends on what else was on offer.
Score: 5/10, the taste was off putting for me, stick to regular Spitfire.
Beer 2: Goram
Volume: 5.0%
Brewery: Butcombe
Brewery Location: Bristol
So again, Butcombe Original is a fairly national beer. They've also been rolling out their Rare Breed in pubs around here to good success. However this is the first time I've ever seen Goram, I opted for it as it was a stronger beer at 5%. It's quite hoppy, with a strong citrus, fruity flavour, and sometimes that's not my thing, but this was actually a really good balance. It's something that would go well either as a summer beer, or with a hearty meal, making it a beer for all year round. If you ever see a Butcombe beer, they're really well put together beers, and would encourage you to have a go on them.
Would I have it again? Yes, certainly.
Score: 8/10, not quite as good as Rare Breed, but still really good.
A bit of a short episode this week. Still, please don't hesitate to comment and make suggestions. Happy drinking!
