One step closer…
I’ll admit that after my first match in Combat I was questioning if I could still do this. When you look up and down at the roster, it’s filled with guys a lot younger, and it better shape than I’m in. I know this coming in. I know that I’ll be forty in a few months, and am no longer a young pup. If there was one advantage I have, it’s experience.
I wasn’t sure it would be enough.
Then I was able to pick up a win against Rudolph Samson. In the moment, when I was celebrating victory, I thought, maybe it just might be good enough after all. I left the arena that night knowing, I was closer to becoming the first ever Combat heavyweight champion than I was before.
It was a great feeling.
I hope it was the first is what will be many more in my Combat career.

It’s only been a couple weeks since Muru has moved out to the Boston area for work. In hindsight it’s a decision he made without thinking. Usually his decisions have only affected one person, himself. There was never anyone else’s feelings he had to take into account. Things are different now. His relationship with Emily comes with new territory. Sure his celebrity has come with benefits in the past, but nothing he ever considered long term.
This is different.
He should have talked to her. He should have gotten her thoughts on the move. She’s been pretty good about it considering, but it hasn’t been easy on either of them. That’s why even though it’s only two days before his big match with Lucas Walker, Muru has flown back home.
He’s determined to make their first Valentine’s day together special.
Muru: Here goes everything…
He sits in the back of a limousine, dressed in a nice suit. Almost forty years on this earth and never really celebrating this day, he’s hoping he’s doing this right. He knows she doesn’t need all these fancy things, but he also knows she deserves it.
He walks to the door and knocks. Her dad answers and just rolls his eyes. It’s clear that he doesn’t approve of his daughter dating a man older than he is. When she comes to the door Muru is almost speechless.
Muru: You look...Wow!
In preparation of this special day he made sure that she was able to get the perfect dress. He also wanted her to pamper herself, again she deserves it.
Emily: I take it you like it?
She smiles knowing she has him under a trance.
Muru: You always look beautiful, but tonight…
Emily: I wanted to look good for my man. You don’t look too bad yourself.
He goes in for a kiss, but she pushes him off. This is when he sees the prying eyes of her parents staring at them. Emily whispers in his ear.
Emily: Save it for the limo…
When the get to the street, Muru holds the door open and she enters. He follows her inside and closes the door. The driver pulls away from the curb and heads toward the intended destination.
Emily: Are these for me?
She spots the roses and smiles again. True to her words she plants on kiss on the lips of Muru.
Muru: I was hoping you’d like them. It’s just one of many presents I’m going to give you tonight.
She places her head on his shoulder.
Emily: I’m just glad you’re here. It’s all I needed.
Muru: I can cancel the rest of the evening if you want?
Emily: You went through all this trouble. It’d be rude if I didn’t see it through.
The two lovebirds smile at each other and share another kiss. Muru then grabs the bottle of champagne that is on ice. Pouring two glasses he lets her know how he feels.
Muru: I love you…
Emily: I love you too…
I’m pretty sure there’s nobody more excited about Friday Night Fury than me. After a quick trip home for a little distraction, I’m ready to prove that Muru still has a little left in the tank. The buzz of the wrestling world is “Who’s going to be the first champions of Combat Wrestling?” The competition is still wide open and I’m happy to be a part of it all. This is the second week of competition and this is where the front runners are going to stake their claims.
We have competitors from all walks of life, and I think that’s what makes it exciting. We have the entitled rich kid, the brutal monster, a competitive eater, a Polynesian prodigy, a backwoods brawler, and a bunch of guys who are just hoping for a second chance. But we also have a veteran, and I just might be the one who wants it the most.
It’s true, I’ve had a long career. Even though it was long and fulfilling, I’ve never been as successful as I’ve hoped. I’ve always been a good hand to have around if you wanted to see something special, but I’ve never been that superstar, that top dog. In Combat I feel that despite my age I have that shot. I think it’s because Spike Kane knows that just because you lost a step doesn’t mean you can’t walk the walk.
I’m appreciative of all the opportunities I’ve had so far in the Combat. I’m going to show everyone I’m not done yet. I may not be “The Greatest Show on Earth” anymore, but I’m still well worth watching.
This week I get to step in the ring with Lucas Walker once again. I know first hand that this kid is impressive. When you get in the ring with him it’s like wrestling a small tree. There is a local baseball announcer from where I’m from and Walker is the kind of guy he would call “country strong”. If I didn’t think he was going to be a big deal I wouldn’t blow smoke up anyone’s ass. This kid will make it to the top...someday.
The last time we shared a main event Lucas, neither of us were able to walk away with a victory. I’m glad it didn’t stop either from us from making an impact on the heavyweight championship tournament. I know I found some confidence with a win over Samson. Even though you’ve yet to win a match in Combat, it isn’t getting you down is it?
I know it must have been a little disheartening to here to bell during your match with Taane. A time limit draw is a bad break. I’m just glad that even though you didn’t win you were still able to advance in the tournament. I hope you’re not sitting there fretting on if you deserve it. Just be glad you get to move on. Got to look on the bright side!
Unfortunately, for every brightside, there is another side. You got to advance, but you were paired up with me. I call that a tough draw. There are plenty of big men you might have been better suited to face, but instead you get the quickest man left. You remember earlier when I called you a tree? Last time I checked, trees aren’t known for being fleet of foot.
I know what I need to do to beat you. I need to strike fast and often. I need to make sure you don’t strike me down with those tree branches you call arms. I need to use every advantage I have.
Lucas Walker, there is no doubt in my mind that I can beat you. I’ve been in this business too long to allow the doubt to creep in. I’m sure you’re looking at me and thinking the same thing. You should be confident, even if you’ve done nothing to make you so. It’s just a matter of time. I just can’t let your first win come at my expense.
When that bell rings I’m going to bring it and leave everything in the ring. The stakes are too high not to. I just hope that when it’s all over and I pin you in the middle of the ring, that we can be good sports about it.
Just because we have a career where we knock the snot out of each other doesn’t mean we can’t be civil when it’s all over.
If you win, your family will be proud.
If you lose, I bet they will be proud as well.
Just remember that when you see my hand raised in victory.
Good luck Lucas, you’re going to need it.
