We open scene rolling along the m6 towards Manchester for the first ICW Pay per view to happen in the UK, Castle Of Glass. Bobby Barratt sits in his new prize motor, formerly Jay Kay’s purple Lamborghini Diablo. Next to him sits former ICW Owner Shawn Rossdale. They’re chatting away about the match Bobby has coming up with Bret Stetson without a care in the world. Jenny Stackhouse sits in the back of the car, half listening as she tries to catch a quick nap before they arrive. Bobby and Shawn are singing along to Linkin Park’s “Castle of Glass” as the wind rushes through Shawn’s long hair from the window being open.
“'Cause I'm only a craaaaack in this caaastle of glaaaass
Hardly aaaanything there for you to seeeee”
They’re singing along at full volume, Jenny tries to cup her hands over her ears to show the boys that she isn’t messing around and actually wants to get a bit of sleep. She gets ignored. The boys are lost in the moment and she smiles to herself as she slowly drifts off to sleep.
All of a sudden, the car screeches to a stop, in a way which is physically impossible. Shawn goes flying through the windshield into the road.
Bobby awakes with a start. He’s covered in sweat and panting heavily as we see the focus switch to the bottle of Ambien next to him on the bedroom cabinet. He’s obviously still taking things to help him sleep. Tears fill his eyes as he realises it was all a dream and his best friend is still no longer with us.
Baby, are you ok?
Baby, are you ok?
Jenny sits up next to Bobby, wondering what the fuss and panic is about.
I don’t know. I just had this really fucked up dream that….My car!
Bobby jumps up with a start and hops over to the window of his 3 bed home in Walsall, England. His Diablo still sits there on the driveway, perfect condition. The moonlight reflecting off its metallic purple exterior, shimmering in the night.
It was a dream…I dreamt about him again.
I know baby. It’s been hard on us both. But you know you’re not helping yourself taking a handful of that stuff every night. You know that, right?
I know. I just can’t sleep. Every time I voluntarily close my eyes, I still see it. I still see him going through the screen, I still hear the dull thud his body made as he hit the ground. The sounds he made as he fought for his life and the way people around only wanted to get pictures or video because a guy with an ounce of popularity was dying. Heartless fucks.
I only wish there was something I could do to help. Do you want me to call Lucas? Tell him you can’t make the PPV?
And make his day? Fuck no! There’s nothing more that jumped up prick would want to see than for me to quit! It’s literally his goal to drive me out of ICW, one way or another.
Then tell me what to do. What makes it better?
I don't know...I guess I just need time. What’s up with you anyway? You’ve been acting strange lately.
I…umm….Nothing. Don’t worry about it.
Come on, what’s up?
I don't know...I guess I just need time. What’s up with you anyway? You’ve been acting strange lately.
I…umm….Nothing. Don’t worry about it.
Come on, what’s up?
Bobby, it’s fine. You have more than enough to deal with right now. It’s nothing and I don’t need to dump it on you. We can talk after the show, OK?
Bobby looks a little shocked that Jenny would snap at him like that. It’s not like her at all. She’s normally so tender…So…nice.
Well I’m up anyway. I got something to get done today, so I'll leave you be...
Babe, it’s 4:30. You don’t have anything you need to get done at this time of night. Come on back to bed.
I’ll only keep you up. You seem like you have stuff you aren’t ready to talk about yet. You don’t need me making it worse. Get some sleep baby.
Bobby kisses Jenny on the head as she snuggles back into her blanket. She’s asleep before his feet hit the floor. He changes into some loose fitting clothes before headed towards the door.
I love you….Remember that…Always.
With that, he heads out of the door, closing it softly behind him. He heads down the stairs, putting on some loose fitting trainers and a hoodie, clutching at his bag and headed out of the house. He climbs into his car, starting the engine and getting off the driveway, pulling away down the road.
She’s going to leave me. Shawn left me and now it looks like Jenny is planning on it too. Why? Is it because I’m not the guy I was before Shawn died? Is it because of my repeated failure to capture the ICW World Title? I bet she’s shacking up with him isn’t she? Fucking Jack! I wonder if Dakota knows?
All of the time Bobby is ranting, the car is getting faster and faster. The engine screams and the power really starts to whip up. Luckily there is no one around at this time.
Would anyone miss me? The locker room fucking hate me, the fans aren’t much more receptive and Lucas wants my head on a spike. There’s only so much torment a guy can take. What if I just left? What if I never came back? What if I…..?
No!
That’s the drugs talking. They’re making me crazy. I know it. Why can’t I control it? Why do I still see you, Shawn? Why did you leave everyone but me? Leaving me to feel crazy? We were supposed to bring around the change, man! Now you’re gone!
Bobby pulls into a deserted car park on the edge of some woodland. By now he's been driving for around twenty minutes. Flicking the lights off and opening the door upwards. He climbs out of the car slowly, looking around, nervously. No one is to be seen.
This feels right...Is this the place? Is this what you want, Shawn?
A brisk wind blows through the place, rustling leaves and making the hairs on the back of Bobby’s neck stand up. He has goosebumps all over.
Very well….You know she won’t forgive us, right? That’s if she isn’t already planning on leaving.
Silence.
You really think this is how the pain stops? You really think this is the only way I stop waking up in sweats every night?! The only way I stop people…even my enemies….looking at me with a look of fucking pity in their eyes?!
Bobby walks around to the other side of the car, opening the door and pulling out a black bag. He throws it over his shoulder and walks into the woods. After 5 minutes or so, he comes to a stop, looks up and pulls a pen and paper out of his pocket and starts scribbling frantically:
“Jenny.
I want you to know this wasn’t because of you. I just couldn’t bare to see the look in your eyes when you saw me hurting, knowing there was nothing you could do. I hated the person I’d become. I was lashing out, taking far more pills than you know of. Stuff to sleep, stuff to wake me up and stuff to keep me functioning throughout the day.
The truth is I have been hearing Shawn for weeks. In my sleep, when I’m awake and all day long. He wants me to come join him, baby. He wants us all to be together, but I could never make that choice for you. That’s your decision and your decision alone. My decision however is that I can’t take the pain anymore. I can’t take every day knowing I left my best friend to die. His final moments alone, scared and not knowing if anyone would be waiting for him up there.
I hope some day you will forgive me for this. I hope you will be able to move on, live a happy life and be the person you want to be. You deserve that much!
Jenny Stackhouse, I love you.
Love forever
Bobby
X”
He takes his phone out and checks something.
Got it.
Bobby throws his bag to the floor. Opening it, it becomes apparent that he is pulling rope out of the bag. This doesn’t look good! He is sitting there tying the rope while looking at his phone screen. He ties one loop over another, winding it around and around before giving it a good sharp pull.
That looks perfect.
Bobby lifts his creation and we see he has tied a noose! He looks at it hesitantly before looking upwards to the tree, finding a branch to throw the rope over. It takes him a few tries, but after 5 minutes of trying, he manages it, tying a knot and making sure it is all secure by really pulling on the rope. Neither the branch or the rope move. He looks to the sky.
Is this what you want Shawn?! Is this the way you wanted me to go on without you?! Give me a fucking sign you prick!
Thunder strikes the ground about half a mile away, making a massive noise.
CRACK!!
Bobby looks up at the skies with a look of defeat in his eyes. If ever there was a sign on a summers night, this was it. Rain starts hammering down, accompanying the thunder. The mud around him quickly turns to sludge. Bobby slowly puts his head through the loop in the rope. A mixture of heavy rainwater and tears run down his face.
I’m coming, buddy! You won’t be alone anymore! I won't leave you again, I promise!
Bobby looks over his shoulder, seeing that he is at an appropriate height. He gives the knot one more tug before taking a deep breath that seems to feel like forever. Slowly one foot leaves the branch and the other follows. In this instant, another clap of thunder strikes. It hits the tree Bobby is in, on the branch his rope was tied around, breaking the branch clean off the tree!Bobby falls from the tree, the rope offers no resistance and he falls face first into a pile of mud and leaves. Headlights fill the area as a car comes screaming into the car park. Jenny gets out of the car, wondering what was going on and seeing Bobby sitting up, a noose around his neck wondering what went wrong.
Baby!!
Bobby tries to reply, but through the tears his words are incomprehensible. He manages to stuff the note into his pocket as Jenny hugs him tightly.
I’m sorry! I couldn’t do it…Knowing you were leaving me too!! You were all I had left!
Leaving you?! What on earth gave you a stupid idea like that?!
The fact you don’t talk to me, how you’ve been strange around me lately. How you stay home instead of touring with me now. You didn’t even come to Shawn’s grave because you were “sick” I know the signs Jen!
You clearly don’t, Bobby! Here, you want a sign? You want to know what I was holding back on telling you? Here!
Jenny throws something from her pocket at Bobby. It hits him hard in the chest but he manages to catch it. Unfurling the plastic bag around it, he looks down, seeing a little white stick…with two little lines on it.
Bobby, I’m pregnant!!
