Standing in the center of an XHF Network ring, casting a long shadow from the dimmed back lights is the toned body of “The Polynesian Prodigy” Taane. The arena is empty, no sound can be picked up apart from the low, Californian tones of the talented young wrestler. His voice steady and purposeful, his body language relaxed, his face calm yet subtly determined, Taane begins to speak.
Taane: In this ring…
The three words ring out crisp and clear. No flashy intro, no familiar Polynesian shout, none of the traditional bookend that Taane customarily begins his promotional videos with. Just three words.
Taane: In this ring…
Taane repeats himself, adding a little extra emphasis on the words as he muses over their significance.
Taane: In this ring, this theatre of war, this showcase of professional wrestling talent. In this ring there will be a collision of every corner of the XHF network. Wrestlers, some familiar opponents, some combinations that would make those who book crossover shows to share amongst their friends very dreams come true will battle for bragging rights in not only their own federations but across every federation that this network carries.
Taane: In this ring the greatest assembly of wrestling talent that this world has ever seen will fight for honour, for pride, for you, the fan’s, pleasure. Bodies will be broken, scars will be left that will never heal, old wounds will surface, nagging injuries will be fought through. All for that shot, that one precious shot at glory.
Taane: In this ring the very best of the XHF Network will be defending their home turf. They will be representing not only their own reputation but the reputation of every wrestler from the federation they call home. Every eye in their own locker room will be on them. Every wrestler will want to return a hero because though they may be hated, envied, opposed from every corner of their own federation that prestige will be carried home with them and will reflect positively on the rest of their locker room.
Taane: In this ring wrestlers will become stars, stars will become superstars, superstars will become legends and legends will carve into stone the next chapter in their legacy. Reputations will be enhanced, public profiles will be raised. Every head in the wrestling world from the highest profile owners to the lowliest young lions scraping their living at the bottom of cards while they season their talents will be watching. Every dirtsheet journalist will be taking notes, looking to see who the next great shining light of the wrestling world will be.
Taane: And what of me?
His voice becoming more animated, Taane begins to hype himself up, fire entering his tones as he moves from cool assessment to full on commitment in his statements.
Taane: In this ring I will go to war, I will showcase my skills, my talents, my unique blend of professional wrestling that blends so seamlessly an aerial attack that will flatten the competition, an agility and speed that makes me hard to predict in the ring and doubly hard to stop from doing whatever I want. I will bring my power game because I throw fools around like they were made of paper. I may not be the biggest dog in the fight but I bite harder than any man. And I will fight, flat out fight like my life depended on it because no man can bring the fire like the son of The Maori Badass.
Taane: In this ring I will make the fans dreams come true because anyone out there who has argued with their friends over who Taane would make the best match up with across the Network will see that broadcast straight to their homes, live and direct. I will take those bragging rights, I will fight to my very last breath to throw any wrestler who dares cross my path over the ropes. Don’t take this as a lack of respect, I gots a ton of props to throw to a ton of you guys. But I am not holding back, not backing down.
Taane: In this ring I promise to leave nothing behind. Any scars I earn in the course of this match will be a permanent reminder that I am putting everything on the line to earn victory. Any injuries I sustain, any damage I take will all be worth it at the end of the day. And come the end of the match I guarantee, I guaran-DAMN-tee that I will have given it my all. Because I pride myself on the fight and this is the biggest damn fight the network can offer.
Taane: In this ring I will be be honoring Combat Wrestling. Spike Kane is a hell of a wrestler with a hell of a reputation. What Spike has achieved in setting up Combat Wrestling comes backed with a lifetime of wrestling knowledge. He knew my father briefly, which played a huge part in his hiring of me. But I’m not representing Spike Kane. Spike Kane is representing Spike Kane. I’m representing his idea. His concept. I’m representing Kyle Frye. I’m representing Lucas Walker. I’m representing Aiden Reynolds, Dawn Halliwell, Crystal Hilton. I’m representing a locker room full of talent.
Taane: In this ring I cement the latest platform of which my legacy is built on. My daddy won titles all over the world. Never won a Rumble. I’ve been to two Rumble-like events in my life, but the first was watching my daddy win the SWF Tag Team Titles, shout-out to Dace Night, and the second was watching my daddy win the SWF World Heavyweight Championship and debuting the move that ends careers, the Va’aiga Stinger. So he never got to fight in one because he never got a chance to. I get my chance. And you hold that brass ring over me I am gonna reach up and grab it.
Taane: In this ring the eyes of my locker room are on me. The eyes of the Network are on me. The eyes of every wrestling fan are on me. The eyes of every wrestling journalist are on me. The eyes of every wrestling fan in the damn world are on me. And I ain’t gonna let any of you, not one single soul down. Because I am Taane. I am The Polynesian Prodigy. Every day of my life has been shaped by this industry. I was learning how to throw down before I was learning how to walk. Professional wrestling isn’t a job, an outlet, an experience. Professional wrestling isn’t a damn game to me. Professional wrestling is my DAMN life. And every breath I’ve EVER drawn has lead me to where I am now, a competitor in this Rumble.
Taane: In this ring I show the world that I was BORN TO DO THIS.
Slowly, methodically Taane extends his pinkie finger and thumb out and balls the rest of his hand into a fist, forming the Shaka Sign, the sign of the Polynesian People. Taane raises his arm to the sky in a defiant gesture of ancestral pride. The lights pan downwards leaving just a shadowy outline before finally shutting off.
