PWA.com exclusive: Jaimie Clark interviews Steven Wright
On Sunday night, the team of Eric Chronister, Steven Wright and The Mechanic will take on Anguish, Mr. America and Kenneth Casper in a six-man Tag-Team match, the first match in Pro Wrestling Alpha's history, at the XHF Network's global 'End Of Days' event in Dublin, Republic of Ireland!
We sent reporter Jaimie Clark to interview Steven Wright, formerly known as 'El Hijo Del Muerte' in Empire Wrestling, and get his thoughts on his return to the ring and the upcomingg match.
We see a wrestling ring set up in a small hall, a facility hired by PWA for its talent to practice and hone their in-ring skills before a big match. Tonight the makeshift gym is in Dublin ahead of PWA's debut match at End Of Days on Sunday night.
PWA interviewer Jaimie Clark is standing in front of the ring with a microphone in her hand as a number of trainee wrestlers, referees and PWA staff mill about in the background.
JAIMIE CLARK
Hello everyone, thanks for joining me in this PWA.com exclusive interview as I pick the brain of one of our newest signings here in PWA, Steven Wright.
The camera pans out slightly as Wright steps up next to Jaimie. He has a towel slung across his shoulders, and is sweating from working out.
JAIMIE CLARK
Steven, we are just two days away from our first match and your debut for this company and you've been put together with Eric Chronister and The Mechanic to face the team of Anguish, Mr. America and Kenneth Casper - now if I learned anything about you in our time together in Empire Wrestling, it's that you don't enjoy sharing the spotlight. Do you agree that's a fair assessment?
STEVEN WRIGHT
Yeah, I think that's a fair assessment alright. I don't need teammates, I don't need anybody beside me because I came to PWA to prove one thing; that I am the best technical wrestler in this entire network.
JAIMIE CLARK
There are rumours going round that you might be a "weak link" for your team on Sunday because of that very mentality; that you might not be willing to be a "team player" and come to the aid of your partners if they're in need. Do you have anything to say regarding these claims?
STEVEN WRIGHT
Listen, I'm not happy about it but I'll go along with Eddie's little tag-team plan for now. My team can count on me. So long as they stay out of my way, I'll do what it takes to get us the win.
JAIMIE CLARK
Since you left wrestling over a year ago, your 'El Hijo Del Muerte' gimmick has gained somewhat of a cult following online, particularly after XHF Network gained the rights to the Empire video library. What made you come back to the ring under your real name, rather than putting on the mask again to capitalise on your new-found fan-favourite status?
Wright signs.
STEVEN WRIGHT
Look, I don't care about being a "fan favourite" in the slightest. I go out there for my interests, not the fans'. Eddie wants me to be a "good guy" now I'm here, well I'm just gonna be the same guy I always was. I don't care whether the fans boo me or cheer me, so long as I see that "W" next to my name at the end of the night when they're splitting up the money. As for bringing back Muerte? Nah. I did that once as a one-off for AWF. Back when I first did it, it was great to be able to get into the character and really change my mindset. Now though, since everyone knows who I am, it'd just be pandering to the fans and I'm not in the business of pandering. If they wanna cheer me, they can cheer me for what I do, not for a costume.
JAIMIE CLARK
Just one more question, Steven, and since you brought up "what you do", do you mind giving us a glimpse of what's to come for Steven Wright in PWA?
STEVEN WRIGHT
Why does anybody get into this business, besides the love of the game itself? If your answer is "fame and fortune" then you're in the wrong line of work. I came here to win championships. Anything less is a waste of my time. Anyone can be rich and famous in this sport just for having a marketable face that can be plastered on posters and toy packaging, or for going to visit sick kids in the hospital. Only the best in the ring can call themselves a champion. I'm here to win gold, and as soon as PWA's World title is established, I'm gonna be fighting to get my hands on it.
Wright turns away from Jaimie and heads straight back to the ring.
JAIMIE CLARK
Well thank you Steven, and there you have it folks - this Sunday night Steven Wright vows that he WILL be on the same page as his teammates but hes going to be looking after number one both on the night, as he teams up with Eric Chronister and The Mechanic to face Anguish, Mr. America and Kenneth Casper in six-man Tag-Team action, and going forward in the hunt for the PWA World Championship!
The clip ends, and fades to the PWA logo.
