Whooo! Chapter two has been completed! While going through Blue I realized just how restrictive Kanto is for this project. I learned that I need to not waste Pokemon who can be used for HMs as just nothing mon. On the plus side, that also means I became more open to using Pokemon I'd usually not use or consider purposeless (I often base my teams around the needed HMs). This all came about because I realized my planned Cut-er is kind of a boss and giving him cut would have been a downgrade- so he became my Strength mon instead. For this challenge I've had to monumentally change my play style. Usually I'd grab any Pokemon right away and just replace them as needed, so there'd still be a few mon from early in the game in my party at the end. But since I'm having to conserve and preplan I end up having a slot open all the way to Cinnabar Island. It's a very interesting learning curve. Anyway, onto the team for Chapter Two: Blue Boogaloo! 1. Andrew Jackson "Thriller" Andrew Jackson was my starter this time. The squirtle line is my go-to for Kanto usually and my first Pokemon game was actually Blue so this was a trip down memory lane for me. Sort of- actually it felt completely fresh since 90% of my team was new. There's a reason Jackson is on the $20 bill and that's because he's a stalwart Pokemon who you can rely on to handle any situation. Plus he can surf! 2. Martin Van Buren Much like last round, the 2nd mon turned out to be a surprise tank. As it turns out, Gen1 was very kind to Sandslash. So much so that when all the moves were added, Cut seemed to be a waste. So Van Buren changed his role to my power mon and boy did he live it. His attack and defense stats were at starter levels- which is all the more impressive since he's a two-form mon that evolves early. 10/10 would totes use again.....BUT I CAN'T BECAUSE THAT'S THE RULES OF THE CHALLENGE 3. William Henry Harrison His namesake died 30 days into office; that's a preview for what I had coming. With Van Buren's role re-assigned, I suddenly panicked and scrambled because I'd need a cutter soon enough. This was my choice- not that I wanted it; it was my only choice. So I grabbed a bellsprout. And, honestly, it was fine. With the exception of Lavender Tower, Harrison could cut through all his problems. He ended up being key against the elite four too; taking out all of Lorali's pokemon without even breaking a sweat. 4. John Tyler As I noted in the introduction, I realized I had to conserve HM-ready pokemon for the *checks notes* ....3 other times I have to come to Kanto (because the remakes won't let me get Crowbat until postgame). With that in mind I actually had some more freedom to screw around and try a pokemon I wouldn't normally use. I decided to go for the Venonat line. It was an interesting choice I have no regrets about. In terms of stats, Tyler was easily the worst. Right before the Elite Four I juice my pokemon with the vitamins I'd found on my adventure and Tyler got most of them. But in terms of how he played? You would never know- Tyler was awesome. His biggest problem was that in Gen1 he has like no poison attacks; but it doesn't matter because his special stat is high and he learns psychic. What was real fun was tanking shots from psychic pokemon (super effective!) and then turning around and using leech life on them (also super effective). A cool choice that only works in Gen1. 5. James K. Polk During my Red play-through I realized that along with conserving normal pokemon, I can sort of play fast and loose with legendaries. In the Kanto series there's three obtainable before the Elite Four and in the remakes Moltres even gets moved closer to Cinnabar. You can probably guess I have full intent to abuse this and have AWESOME POWER on my team. Polk brought the goods. At the beginning of my fight with Scorps (the rival), Polk missed a thunder and ate a full-powered hyper beam from his gyarados. He was sent flying back through the walls, all the walls, all the way back to Lorali. Scorps laughed. "Is that what you call a legendary?" Then a blood-curdling war-cry shook the whole building. "No, that is." I said as Polk came back after tanking the hardest shot in the game and messed up a pokemon 10 levels above him. 6. Zachary Taylor Some interesting facts about Rapidash. 1. It doesn't learn the main fire move, Flamethrower naturally. 2. There's no Flamethrower TM in Gen 1. 3. Rapidash actually has sort of a low special stat. All in all, the ponyta line in Gen1 is one of those "bad fire types" that'd be fixed after the gen 3 stat split. But that doesn't mean that Rapidash is a bad Pokemon- just a bad fire-type. Rapidash had a high attack and speed stat so it could come in and mess up the place real fast. And lack of Flamethrower meant I had to actually use Blaine's Fire Blast TM and....holy crap. I forgot how OP the "super" moves were in Gen1. Taylor almost KOed a Rhydon in one hit with Fire Blast- a "not very effective" move. So yeah, "bad" stat wise, but in practice actually pretty darn cool. That's my team for this round. Up next is Yellow- which means I am forced to use a Pikachu on my team and not evolve it. Great. Actually it's fine because I think in Sun and Moon I can catch wild special Raichu's- and even if I can't, I found out that I can catch Raichu's at the Power Plant (unless they patched that out in FireRed/LeafGreen). It should be interesting next round because my options are becoming increasingly limited and I am gonna have to figure out who I *think* will be better Gen1 than whatever generation the remakes are in. Or I'll play fast and loose and hope for the best. I'll probably do a little bit of both. Whoo! Pokemon!

When you hit firered/leafgreen don't sleep on Tentacruel, he is a special defense wall and is quite nasty with a bit of surf and sludge bomb. Also for when you do the remake ... if you can trade for the Jynx ... she is ALL speed and sp. attack. Ice/Psychic. I wrecked house with her. Just some ideas.

Oh I'm totes waiting for the special split gens and I'll be all up in that Tentacruel activity. As for Jynx, I'm debating if I wanna wait for whatever gen we get the pre-evolution and use her for that. That way I don't have to use an already nicknamed Pokemon (otherwise I would have grabbed Marcel the Mr. Mime already)

I love Sandslash I've used him in one of the Pokemons, always with CUT probably a mistake.
Venonat's Leech Life. One of my favourite abilities in Pokemon.
AHAHAH!
Now you really have limited choices for your Pokemon and it will be very interesting to see who will you pick up for your Pokemon Yellow team. Great challenge. Makes me want to play Pokemon and learn more about stats and such, I didn't cared that much when I was younger. Let's go Pikachu!

Yellow is off to a questionable start. I lost the very first match and neither Pokemon on my team are particularly strong right now. I think this will be the "Challenge" episode, lol

Woooooo! Yellow is done. That's all of generation 1 under the hood! So I had noted that I was worried this would be a challenge- and it was. The game straps you with an un-evolvable pikachu and tells you to do your best. Pikachu sucks. He ended eating up almost all the vitamins at the end of the game just to get him closer to everyone else's stats. He wasn't even close though. Like seriously, even his special stat was garbage compared to another pokemon THAT DIDN'T EVEN LEARN SPECIAL MOVES NATURALLY. Having said that, Yellow is a fun game even how and if you're not restricted you can get all 3 original starters to even things out. I didn't- but you can. Anyway, let's look at my team for The Incredible Journey Part 3: Not-So Mellow Yellow! 13. Millard Fillmore Just look at that face- YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID YOU LITTLE DICK. Anyway, this is the aforementioned pikachu. His stats were bad but it was fun having a pokemon follow you around. The best was on the spinny tiles because he'd spin right behind you. Pikachu wasn't good for too much but didn't die (I ended up getting full happiness on him) and oddly enough got the final shot on Scorp's last pokemon (Vaporeon). It was a quick attack to get rid of the last sliver of health left. This is interesting because I both resented Fillmore and almost replaced quick attack with swift. 14. Franklin Pierce I needed something to get past Brock since unlike in the anime, pikachu can't do squat. Nidorans start in Yellow to learn double kick early. Before I even got to Misty I had already evolved him up to a nidoking. So an early evolved nidoking is like a super tank, right? Ehhhhh....yes? Like he hit like a hammer and had a good variety of moves, but I think Pierce fainted the most out of all my pokemon. Take that for what you will. 15. James Buchanan Ok, so cards on the table, I already knew this was a mistake. But I needed a cutter and generally bad gen 1 mon are better in gen 1 than later because of the special split in future generations. As it turned out though, Buchanan was sort of a tank. Like he moved slow but he ended up being pretty useful. His garbage "leech life" attack turned out to do some massive damage on both psychics and poison (it's only good against poison in gen1). Towards the end his usefulness became less and less but still a surprisingly good Pokemon for going on an adventure with. 16. Abraham Lincoln What a better way to represent one of our greatest presidents than with a faceless death machine! But really, I've never used starmie before but it is AWESOME. I just needed a so-so pokemon for Surf but starmie ran surf and psychic really strongly and pretty much could one-shot most pokemon in the first turn. So in the end I was super happy to have this guy on my team just wrecking everything. 17. Andrew Johnson Interesting fact: It's easier to get a tauros in Yellow than Red/Blue. Other fact: It's extremely easier to get a tauros in any other Pokemon game. But oh my gosh, it was worth the 20 times of restarting and going back to the Safari Zone to get this monster. Tauros' stats are good- like all of them. Even its worse stat (special) was better than pikachu's. It's defense is way better than it should be and it's speed is hilarious (which helps because in gen1 crit hits are based on speed). I ended up putting thunderbolt and ice beam on Johnson (along with strength and it's natural stomp) and he ended up being the most important mon of mine during the Elite Four. I had Johnson take down almost all of Lorali's team with thunderbolt and all of Lance's dragons with ice beam. Johnson was just an angry bull, and the whole world was his china shop. 18. Ulysses S. Grant Going along with what I started last round, I used a legendary as a flyer (I don't need to save legendaries). Oddly enough though, I never used Grant. Like....ever. I just used him to Fly from here to there. As I mentioned, Johnson had ice beam and it was enough. I don't think Grant saw any battle, which is funny since he's named after a major Civil war General. I'm sure he would have been awesome (had I actually used him).
Anyway, that's the end of Generation 1. Up next I'll be entering into Generation 2. This will be more tricky by far. There's like 5-7 HMs and three of them are water. So I have to be ultra careful with my teams because there's not that many new pokemon and I still need to save gen1 guys for FireRed and LeafGreen. But it'll be fun because I think most of us don't have a ton of experience in Johto, usually playing it one time and then never again (or playing each game once if you're like me). So it'll feel new and that'll actually add to the challenge since I'm not sure where to get which Pokemon. Oh boy! Stay tuned!

I always rocked this team in Gen 1;
Nidoking (my fave) Gengar (second fave) Scyther (awesomer when evolved in later gens) Blastoise (duh) Arcanine OR Ninetails (both badass fire types) Raichu (fucking DON)
Venomoth and Golem were my backup asskickerz and Arbok surprisingly.

Yeah, I'm hoping to grab an arcanine or ninetails when I do FireRed and LeafGreen. Arbok is strong eh? I'll have to consider him too.
The problem with Gengar, Scyther, and Golem is they all have trade evolutions- something I'm unable to do with the challenge so I feel I'll be getting cheated with less-than-best pokemon.
But the challenge is fun, I'm getting to try Pokemon I haven't really used before

Also Scyther doesn't evolve in Gen 1 so you can usually find a decent enough one in the Safari Zone. Anityer thing I had was a 'do-all' Pokemon that could Cut, Fly, Surf and Flash. Shitty moves for the most part so I would put them all in one, I think Farfetch'd.

Yeah, I thought about grabbing Scyther gen one but I only really needed it for cut and he comes too late for that. Farfetch'd is terrible and you should feel terrible for using it (coming from my experience using it). I might try to get a Pinsir in the bug catching contest if it's early enough in Gold/Silver/Crystal. They never normally evolve in the games and I don't care about mega evolution BECAUSE THIS ISN'T DIGIMON NINTENDO

Hey guys! Long time no write-up! That's because Gold and Silver are....long. Also my life has been exceedingly unstable. But that's neither here nor there. So as I just mentioned, we've moved into Generation 2 of the series. Gen 2 kept some of the stuff that Gen 1 had, like each type having a specific attack formation (which ended up helping me later)- that is to say that like fire is always special, normal is always physical and whatnot. Along with that came GameFreak's first attempt to balance the game by adding a new type: Dark. Dark was supposed to be the answer for Psychic which was uber OP in Gen 1. It...sort of worked? It didn't really change anything in Gen 2 but really takes effect in Gen 3 where things are much better. Oh also there's steel type now, I think it was more of a logical move since some pokemon are made of metal and there should probably be some acknowledgement of that. Generation 2 also introduced gender across all pokemon. To answer this, my girl pokemon are named after reigning English queens. BUT, because GameFreak has never been good at being politically correct the first time female pokemon aren't as good as the male ones. Specifically their stats are lower and their attack power is capped- thanks Nintendo! Some interesting stuff about Gold/Silver. These weren't supposed to just be part 2 of the pokemon journey; they were supposed to be the end. The game is presented as a direct sequel and you can go back to Kanto because Gold and Silver was supposed to tie up loose ends and end the pokemon series. That...didn't happen. As it turns out, people love pokemon so now they keep making new games. I remember being a kid and the world felt so big with two "countries" in one game. But during this playthrough I noticed that both Johto and Kanto are sort of sparsely populated, and the leveling is basically the same as one game (the Elite Four are in the middle and only around the 40's 50's in levels). So really it was all a trick and we fell for it as children. Anyway, let's get on to TEAM GOLD! Yeah! 19. Rutherford B. Hayes
My favorite part about playing the Gen 2 games is getting to use my main starter: Typhlosion. I love this pokemon even though it's technically a "bad" fire time. They've done a lot of work on him in more recent generations but wow was he hobbled in Gold and Silver. He doesn't learn flamethrower until level 60, SIXTY! Needless to say that didn't happen. Anyway, I found that that it's highly likely all of my starters will also double as my cutters; because Johto Pokemon are not good at HMs but Johto loves HMs. Also I'm less familiar with Johto so just to be safe I'm soloing with my starter longer. 20. Mary I
This pokemon's namesake is also called "Bloody Mary." That's accurate. Due to my frustration with not knowing the game well and being upset about HMs, I made a lot of decisions on random whims. Mary was one of them. Sudowoodo sucks- but Mary did not. She ended up being my strength mon, and my main gym leader destroyer. I had trained a Sudowoodo years ago and had a ton of regret, but this time she was the heart of the team and I'd totes recommend one in the future. 21. Elizabeth I
If there's one thing that people remember from Gold/Silver, it's that Whitney's Miltank is an unstoppable beast that will make you reset 20 times. I almost quit pokemon as a child because of that stupid cow- and then when I caught said cow? TERRIBLE! But just like Sudowoodo, Elizabeth turned out to be way better than I remembered. I actually used the rollout strategy and it was pretty darn successful- especially taking down Lance's dragons. LANCE FEARS ELIZABETH! "But why a big rolly cow?" you may ask. Gen 2 loves HM, especially water HMs. So to spread the love a little, Elizabeth was my Surfer, so I was crossing seas on a big moo cow. 22. James A. Garfield
I told you, I kept catching pokemon on a whim. Obviously this is the red gyarados you meet at the Lake of Rage- the other thing most people remember from Gold/Silver. Interestingly, Garfield's namesake died in office- as it turns out, my Garfield was a massive choke artist and fainted in a lot of really important battles. It was weird too, when the battle wasn't clutch, Garfield (my waterfall/whirlpool mon) was an absolute beast. But when I needed him to bring the fire? Somebody else had to cover. 23. Chester A. Arthur
By time I reached the last gym I realized I had all the HMs covered (thanks to the move deleter letting me switch whirlpool and waterfall when needed). Therefore all I needed was a flyer and literally anything else. This is literally anything else. Unown are terrible pokemon with bad stats and only one attack. The attack is also random between each Unown; it's called "hidden power" and has a random type and power for it. So, confession time, Arthur isn't the first Arthur. I figured the only way I'd have a chance with an Unown is if it's hidden power was psychic (to get same type bonus power) and if the attack of it was a little high (in Gen 2 the range is 30-70). So I caught one that seemed like it could have been psychic (it wasn't) then used it to find one that actually was. Arthur ended up having good attack and it's stats weren't bad at all. In fact, I think only it's defense was worse than everyone else's. There's something very satisfying about watching a hieroglyph faint a dragonite. 24. Mary II
I developed a habit in Red/Blue/Yellow to just grab a flyer at the end. This is because it's easier to use rare pokemon for this challenge and keep common ones in case of emergencies- at it turns out had an emergency. My plan had been to catch either a Skarmony or the Santa Claus bird at the end; but as it turns out, both of those aren't in Gold (just Silver and Crystal). So that plan went right out the window and I needed something fast. After angrily catching Arthur to spite the game I waited until "night" and caught a Hoothoot. As it turns out, Hoothoot have terrible attack (made worse by being a female); so Mary II was terrible......until I got to Viridian city because some guy there gave me dream eater- suddenly Mary II was a beast. In all truth, this was a gang of misfit pokemon (except surprising choke artist Gyrados) that ended up changing my opinion on all of them. The game is really unbalanced at the end. The final boss is Red "from the first game" and all his mon are in the 70's-80's even though without grinding yours should be around the late 40's early 50's. I did one grind on the Elite Four and then went back to him for a second try and beat him then (then did E4 again for the Hall of Fame picture). Gold was fun though; and I'm excited to see what Silver has in store!
