I’ll take that to mean that you’re growing worried I’ll lap you with Silver. Smell ya later!

Welcome back to the Incredible Journey! I would have gotten done like a week ago but I got sick and stayed away from the computer. Anyway, today we look at my Pokemon Silver team as we get closer to the end of Gen 2! Before we do that though, I wanted to first touch on moves in Gen 2. For the longest time I couldn't put my finger on why the Johto stuff never really got me excited and this time I figured it out. Moves. More to the point: Generation 2 Pokemon have garbage moves. Just straight up. Like all the major moves are learned in the 60's and everything else is extremely low-powered. Usually, to counter-act this sort of thing we'd use TMs. Gen 1 had awesome TMs like ice beam. No such luck here; the TMs in Gen 2 equally suck. So you end up with a bunch of extremely nerfed pokemon vs a bunch of Gen 1 ubers at the end- totes not fair. Furthermore. If you're wondering why I suddenly have a fetish for fish; it's because Gen 2 loves HM moves- especially water ones. To progress in the game you need three different water HMs: Surf, Whirlpool, and Waterfall. Surf is awesome and waterfall is like less powerful surf but whirlpool is hot garbage and not a lot of pokemon can learn all three. So I'm having to play complicated math games in my head about which pokemon I need to progress. For example, my starter this time could learn Surf and Whirpool, but not Waterfall- great. So I needed to get another water pokemon to balance (turned out really well though). Luckily the move deleter is right where you need whirlpool, so you can use it and then forget about it- I usually switch it with waterfall. But yeah, if you're wondering why I'm not using your favorite pokemon, it's probably because I'm being forced to build my team around HMs. But it does force your team to be balanced (except for the Hoen-esq levels of water). Anyway, on with Team Silver! 25. Grover Cleveland Haha, he's blue like the Sesame Street Grover. Anyway, most folk know Feraligator to be hilariously OP. He is, but not the way I expected. I thought I'd have a real head-smasher; but Feraligator has good defense that allows him to take hits and then dish out pain decently. If such a thing as a "bad" water pokemon existed he would be since his special isn't real good. Just like all my starters this generation, Cleaveland served as my cutter and then also my surfer. So many HMs. 26. Benjamin Harrison The president you've never heard of being played by a Pokemon you probably forgot about. Dunsparce are as their name implies, sparse. They're super rare in the game, requiring either extreme luck (1% appearance rate) or a swarm- I got the swarm. And so started the theme for this run which was rare pokemon. I've read conflicting reports about Dunsparce but it turned out to be pretty useful and strong. All of its stats except for speed ended up being over 100. Even how, as time went on he became somewhat less useful in major battles. Always a powerhouse though, Harrison was my strength mon. 27. William McKinley His namesake died in office- and so he followed such a path. I read online that Smeargle is a garbage pokemon who's just a gimmick and not worth the effort. That's not a nice thing to say, lol. Having said that, McKinley's stats were awful. They were literally half of Harrison at best (except speed, which was fine). But the gimmick of Smeargle is that every 10 levels he can learn any attack his opponent does forever. So the key is to use Smeargle wisely and pray it doesn't faint. I ended up getting Thrash, Hyper Fang, and Ice Beam on him. It was enough. With the type advantage and a pink bow to boost normal attacks, the first two attacks hit hard enough. As it turns out, my last run at the E4 for pictures was Mckinley's crowning moment because he took down all three of Lance's dragonites with ease. But he did faint a lot in important battles- excellent pawn sacrifice if you get my drift. 28. Theodore Roosevelt This spikey ball fish is another super rare in Gen2. You usually need a super rod to get one and that's in Kanto. However, with a spawn he's possible to nab. When I had gotten to the final gym in Johto I only had 3 Pokemon, so the other three came into their own in Kanto, really. And wow Roosevelt got really boss. He ended up being my renaissance pokemon- the one you can throw at anything (except psychics). I gave him like some massive poison TM and he was nuts. 10/10 would train again. Also it's just fun taking down dragons with a spikey rolly ball (which I totes did). Roosevelt was my waterfall guy 29. William Howard Taft So after getting Roosevelt and not the backup I had planned if I couldn't get him, I needed a flasher. So I figured I'd grab this weird deer thing that's semi-rare. Part of the reason Harrison fell to the wayside is because Taft was straight up better. He learned earthquake, psychic, and headbutt. All of them were TMs because as I noted, Gen2 moves sucked but wow did he become a one-shot wonder. And he could take hits too if the first shot didn't work. Taft, much like his namesake, turned out to be quite the heavyweight. 30. Anne Anne ruined my sausage party dream. So everyone remembers skarmory as being super boss- it's not in Gen2. It's just a normal bird pokemon that happens to be metal. It doesn't even learn steel wing till way late, so I ended up getting a TM for it before the last dungeon. But you know what? Just a normal bird that happens to be metal works. Steele meant that this flyer could absorb hits from pretty much most pokemon and continue dive bombing them undeterred. I've had crap defense against psychics so far so a little metal barrier helped a lot. This was probably not my best team- at all. But they were a fun team and using rare pokemon is always a treat. I would advise you guys though to try to use a mix of 1-stage pokemon and ones that evolve; evolving mon usually have better stats in the long-run. Alright guys! Up next is Crystal, the special game of this generation. Will there be fun surprises? I hope so because that's sort of how I planned my team!

Whooo! I bet you guys thought I gave up! I didn't, I just took some time off due to personal issues/it being too cold over by my computer. But I have finished with Crystal and am more than ready for Gen 3. Before that though, let's talk a bit more about Gen 2. So one of the new aspects of the Johto games was the addition of the sun stone. Which is cool because it's another way to evolve pokemon. There's just one problem...there's no stones in Johto. Ok, that's a little bit of an exaggeration: there's literally 2 stones in Johto. There's a moon stone you can get from the Ruins of Alph as long as you jump through some hoops. There's also a sun stone- if you win the bug-catching contest which you can only do on certain days. THANKS JOHTO, NO I DIDN'T WANT TO EVOLVE MY POKEMON AT ALL OR TRY NEW THINGS. #alittlesalty. This creates a huge problem if you wanna try to use a stone mon- luckily I checked because I was planning on grabbing the sunflower pokemon this playthrough but I failed to win the contest. Crystal has a really neat game addition though (aside from an early suicune), the daycare man gives you a free egg with a mystery pokemon inside (and it has like a 15% chance to be shiny, or something like that). I figured that I could use that pokemon to be my extra or maybe throw an HM on him. So I ran around waiting for the stupid thing to hatch and it was......a clefa- which I couldn't use because Clefable was on my Red team. So I was really salty and made a whole bunch of rash decisions that paid off. Overall though, my feelings as a kid about Johto being disappointing haven't changed. They tried to up the difficulty but instead found out how to take all the fun parts out of a pokemon game. Well, except the pokemon- I actually like the mon that came out of Gen 2. Anyway, let's not waste time and get on with the team.... 31 Woodrow Wilson
Chikorita is a good pokemon in other generations; but I found Wilson's move pool lacking a big for this one. Having said that, his stats were always dope, having probably a higher average than Coolige (who you'll hear about later). Wilson, like the other two starters, was my cutter. Again, there was a very strong problem with moves in this gen that require you to do things like stick Cut on your main guy. To be fair I usually put cut on my plants anyway. 32 Victoria
Although named after the queen, Victoria thought she was named after the wrestler- because all she did was kick tail. There's a reason that some pokemon were safari zone exclusive- they were op. Victoria just bashed everything with reckless abandoned. As the powerhouse, she was my Strength user. I grabbed her while I wasted time waiting for stupid "morning" in which to catch.... 33 Elizabeth II
Spurred on by how much fun I had with qwilfish, the fact that I needed two water pokemon anyway AND how angry I was about the whole egg/clefa fiasco I splurged on this rare little thing. But you know what? Corsola is dope. Sure, you can't fight a plant pokemon with it; but you can handle pretty much anything else. And think about this from a logical standpoint. Corsola learns ancient power by leveling up- the only other pokemon that do that are either fossils or revert to some monstrous prehistoric form. That implies that corsola is an ancient pokemon. Now look at its face. This cute little lover-not-a-fighter has derped its way through history. What does that mean? It's got the power and the skills. I used her for surfing (AND DESTROYING ALL WHO OPPOSE ME) 34 The Fabulous Moolah
So a lot of people asked me "What are you gonna name your pokemon after you run out of presidents/queens?" I put it off for a long time because I figured there was a lot of both. As it turns out there's only a few queens, go figure. So I decided that when I finish with the current naming convention I'll switch to WWE Champions. First up is the very first Women's Champion and awful person Fabulous Moolah. True to her name she learned a very dark and terrifying move (shadow ball) and got tremendously better after learning body slam. I made sure I could get the moon stone before catching her because for real Johto is hard about rocks. She was my Flasher (tee hee) 35 Warren G. Harding
A while back Hype suggested farfetch'd and I'd held off during gen 1 because it was a trade pokemon. But it's wild here and people really seem to like it. Cards on the table: I don't like farfetch'd. I had a bad experience during my first or second playthrough ever of pokemon and farfetch'd was by far the weakest link. My opinion hasn't changed much but I will say that gen 2 was kind to the weird duck. Harding ended up having some solid moves that it learned so it hit hard (even with low defense). Of course, really I just caught it so I could fly. But my Harding was definitely better than his namesake. 36 Calvin Coolige
Welcome to the cool side of the pillow! The legendaries are difficult to get for a few generations but Crystal lets you pick up an early suicune (though they replace bite with gust which sucks). It was a big help, especially late game, because Coolige had high defense and pretty good special attack. Since the game forces you to use whirlpool and waterfall, those fell to Coolige (I switched off between them). But the real purpose I ended up using Coolige for was guile. My team was straight-up not ready for Red at the end and I have some glaring weaknesses (THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR, GAME FREAK, IF THERE WERE GOOD DARK POKEMON PRE-E4). But suicune learns toxic, so I could progressively poison my opponents and then tank their hits while they grew weaker. All in all, pokemon is always fun. But I can understand people who put the Kanto stuff above Johto. It was fun, but not as much fun as gen 1. It could have been tons of fun, but in the effort to make the game more difficult they just made it more frustrating (you can still walk through most of it without trouble). I'm very excited for Gen 3 because I remember that feeling more difficult while still being a lot of fun. And I'm sure HeartGold/SoulSilver will be dope because they'll follow the mechanics of that gen. See you in Hoenn!

The dive especially gets me. Still better than whirlpool

As a note I never replayed the first or second gens to compare. But I did try to replay ruby. It's pretty rough. Rather boring and the grind is real. Selection of mon is weak. Just all around hard to play. Heart gold is my favorite game. Is still way too easy and the timed events are rough but overall it's the most fun.

You found ruby rough? I remember loving emerald.....
Timed events kill me. But I think the remakes of gen 2 will be really good with all the updated mechanics

They remade all gens 1 to 3. Fire red, leaf green, heart gold, soul silver, alpha ruby and omega sapphire. Also lets go pikachu and let's go eevee for gen 1 again fusing them with pokemon go

I thought you meant full remake. As in modern age graphics n stuff. I'd play the hell out of Blue again if it was 3DS worthy! I also agree on HeartGold too, it was legit best game. SoulSilver not so much.
Ho-Oh > Lugia

Ruby and Sapphire were remade with 3D graphics though for one of the newer gens

Sweet. So here's the real question- do I buy them for the 3DS or get an emulator like you've been doing. If I do it on the 3DS then I can't rub my Uber mega teams into your face
